I have something like that on my Rockhopper (likely the same as your HR). I stuck a short piece of housing liner in the fitting. Seems to be working well; the cable movement is noticeably smoother.

+1 on not totally needing them; as far as I know they have a centering effect when you put the wheel back on. The QR is supposed to have springs for each end, though. Stay in the C&V zone long enough...

I'm guessing but from the Vintage Trek website the bike looks to be a 1981 Trek 616 model. The 3 main tubes are butted Reynolds 531 with a 0.7mm or 0.6mm wall thickness at the top of the seat tube....
