Specialized Rockhopper Comp 29 2x9 upgrade

Hello good people,

I have a 2015 Specialized Rockhopper Comp 29 and I wanted to upgrade current 2x9 to a 1x

not sure if the bike can handle 2x11 or 2x12, and if so, which one.

specs state bike uses sunrace 9 speed 11-36 whereas hubs are supposed to be Specialized Stout XC, Hi Lo disc, alloy, RCC bearing system, QR, 32h, which tells me diddly squat about what is compatible with.

I could go either sram or shimano, but I want to go 1x with a big lower gear in the back (hopefully a 50T).

My idea is to replace the whole groupset and I did find some Sram NX Eagle 1x12 at a fairly reasonable price but since I have no idea if it will fit, I rather ask prior to spending the money.

Also, will I need to replace the Bottom Bracket if purchasing a groupset? if so, which one will fit my bike... I keep seeing number and getting confused by the minute

best regards and happy trails

According to this you have a 36/22 in front and an 11-36 rear?

I can't see how a 1X? is going to be an upgrade. You'll just have wider steps between gears.

pretty sure your FRAME will limit you to an 11 speed setup. Never seen a 12 speed compatible hub at 135mm O.L.D.(someone will possibly know of one).... if you feel you must go 1x.. get a Derailleur dropper, the correct chain, the shifter/cable, and a 11-40t 10 or 11 speed cassette, and enjoy.

the upgrade I'll have (honestly) is that i get confused with gear ranges, and a 1x will limit my stupidity to a minimum while still having a range. when I get mid socket I never recall which combination will be better and I end up getting stuck on a gear that will not be helpful, and end up losing momentum.

Maddog, thanks... I'll look for a 1x11 and the derailleur dropper. I reckon a complete groupset should be able to sort me out except for the dropper

The frame isn't the issue, as you can get Microspline(Shimano)/XD(SRAM) hubs/wheels in 135mm OLD.

For being worth it as an upgrade, that's up to the OP to decide, they can go upto 11 speed with no change in hub, 12 speed requires a new freehub design (for either Sram or Shimano), which = a new rear wheel , in both cases they won't be as easy to find as 142mm thru axle hubs/wheels

Plenty of options to look at to keep the current hyperglide rear hub, Box Components, Microshift Advent range, or even Shimano at Deore level 11 speed have options for 1x11 with the cassette you have.

You can run 12 speed if you want. All that matters is you can't run a cassette that has a 10 for the smallest cog, it has to start with an 11. Sram's NX cassette and Sunrace CSMZ800 are both made to fit the standard old freehubs.
