Peugeot unknown 70/82 ?
Hi All,
New poster here but long time reader. I decided to embark on a restoration project on a Peugeot road side find some 4 month ago. Instantly fell in love and I can already picture the bike in it's original glory. Have done some detective work and went trough every possible catalogue without any good result. As a new poster I cannot post pictures up until the 10th message so I will give the details in sequential separate posts. Thanks in advance for your help. |
there is a reseller sticker on the front tube between the headset. The bike was purchased some 40 years ago in a small shop in a town near Lille (France). The shop is still active Family own business I guess. They start trading in 1975 so any year after that is a possibility.
I will try to salvage the sticker with the new paint job |
Reynold tubing sticker on the on the down right tube under the saddle and not on the shifter tube
|
Back triangle is half chromed not just the drop out ( some 79 models?)
|
If it's white, that's my bike. I left it be the side of the road. Can you send it to me?
|
The Peugeot catalogs (including the French ones) can be found online here, https://www.bikeboompeugeot.com/Broc...res_France.htm
If there is a Reynolds 531 sticker and the rear triangle is chromed and the date is late 70s, then the bike is quite possibly a PX 10 or similar quality bike. If you load pics to your album, we can view them and post them on this thread. The site does not allow newbies to post pics as this is an anti-spam picture. Looks like a great find and we can give you advice on how best to restore it. Soyez le bienvenue aux Bike Forums. |

Chrome dropouts and a 531tubing sticker would indicate a higher end 70's model some info on components and wheel size 700c or 27inch would help to narrow down the likely model and year.

Thank you Insidious.
I have also 5 post per day limit, bummer. Anyhow few more specs. below Arabesque groups set apart the rear derailleur a Suntour VX badly damaged- This was probably fitted since the beginning Mavic E2 rim and maillard /Spidel hub at the front. The original rear wheel divorced and decided to go separate ways at some point - unknown hub / cassette / rim Braze on shifter cable guides on top of the Bottom bracket BB Shimano 35x1 Contour super royal saddle French handlebar (RR St.Etienne) Peugeot decal seems to be original ( under the clear coat) |
Can you provide a picture of the Reynolds sticker on the seat tube?
|
..on my avatar pic,barely recognisable.
|
531 sticker on seattube would mean 72-73 or before.. but the frame has braze-ons and those wouldn't be there for that year. Fork not original.
So I am guessing with all this. Show pics of Bottom Bracket.. from underneath. Show pic of head badge from front of bike. Show pic of Headset cups. Show pic of seat lug where the bolt seatpost is. |
The Arabesque group set probably restrict the searching field to 78' to early 80s max. Braze on shifter levers boss also present
Nothing underneath the BB so I am guessing that the serial number was on a sticker or similar Head badge replaced by the reseller's badge ( vintage porn) head set cups are pure french stuff as the handlebar. I will post few more pics in few hours. |
The Arabesque group set indicates 78' to early 80's max.
The Peugeot badge has been replaced by the reseller's badge (really French and late 70s graphic) Nothing underneath the bb I guess the serial was on a sticker or similar Seat lugs are visible in the main pic Braze on stop also present where the shifter levers are positioned I will post more pics in few hours |
Front hub spidel / Maillard

I think that the frame was a made to order so possibly a PY

New results on the decal investigation Circa 1978 from a Reynolds catalog. Note the encircled TI logo “manufactured by TI REYNOLDS LIMITED Birmingham England.” A booklet claimed to have been from 1977 also shows this. Reynolds claims this only occurred with 1981 decals. Note that earlier 753/531SL decals show the TI logo, but say “REYNOLDS TUBE CO. LTD.” |
I'll be the first to say, I suspect this is not a Peugeot and is totally a re-paint. I got that vibe from the 1st pic above, but was further confirmed by the last few pics. No clue what it actually is, but...
Can you let us know if there are any stampings under the bottom bracket shell? Also, please tell us what the threading is stamped into the headset top nut and/or adjustable race. And what threading is stamped on the BB cups. If not 35x1, it's not French. |
Thank you Francophile.I am confused as well
The stamp on the BB is indeed a Shimano 35x1. I am inclined to think that the bike is a made to order because the components were of mid good range quality for the late 70's, the production years for all of them are all in the 78-83 max bracket. The bike is French,no doubt about it .The workshop badge point to a business that opened the doors in 1975 in Lille Braze on cable guides on top of the BB were a sort of add on for the time, what really has me doubting are the tubes of the triangle where they joint near the saddle, more of a Raleigh style. What do you think about the lugs? |

I agree. That was the first though I had when I saw that first pic of the seat tube cluster. It always amazes me though that someone would go to the lengths they do to add decals, etc. To what end?

What do you think about the lugs? You mention the head badge is for a shop in Lille, looks like I see a "V A N D" near the top, what's the name? May be able to dig up historical info about the shop in books scanned in by Google. It's unfortunate about the derailleur hanger, but nothing a creative cut and some detail-oriented filing can't correct. I personally feel like the top tube guides are a bit unusual to see along with the braze-on cable guides, although I'm 100% fully aware there's an overlap in time when both existed. That said, the bike is clearly repainted, poorly, and it's entirely possible a previous owner had the cable guides added, thus needed to repaint, and this is the reason for the new decals - maybe Peugeot was the only decals they could get their hands on, or they like the styling of Peugeot's typeface, you never really know. Again, humans are weird. |
