Mercian for repaint, has anyone done it?

At the time that I bought my KOM, it was pretty beat up, especially considering it was built in 2002. I’ve been riding it as is, and it’s been a great bike. I’ve always figured I would get the bike repainted someday. It’s tempting to send it back to Mercian, because, we’ll... they built it. However, it’s does not look like that would be cheap. Has anyone sent a bicycle to them just to get it repainted?

The author of the always excellent Retrogrouch blog has sent a frame to Mercian for a re-paint: The Retrogrouch: Unpacked

He owns quite a few Mercians and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to have a chat to you about it.

Thanks for the tip, I sent him an email. Strangely enough, we live about 30 miles apart.

I think @ascherer may have had his repainted.

Nope. Original finish. Took this about 45 minutes ago.

From what I see on their Instagram feed they do a world class job.

Any repaint worth having done will not be cheap (unless you do it yourself).

In your case, I'm guessing that shipping across the pond twice will add quite a bit to the total cost. Personally, that would be the only thing that would give me pause about sending it back to Mercian. I would very much like the idea that Mercian repainted my Mercian (if I had one), and I'd probably be willing to pay a premium to get it, as long as the premium wasn't too high. But how much is "too much"? That's a question only you can answer.

Assuming you strip the bike down to the bare frame, find a recycled bike box or TV box, and get some kind of corporate shipping rates (Bike Flights, etc), then shipping won't be too bad, relatively speaking. Perhaps $100 to $150 RT?

The rest will be up to whatever deal you get with Mercian.

Any "updates"?
Remove Generator?
More rack mounts?

I am in the process of having two frames shipped to me by Ebay UK sellers, one of whom I've worked with in the past and another who has an excellent reputation. I was charged 100 and 115 GBP for shipping from the UK to California, respectively, by each of them. So you can expect to be out at least $200 and perhaps as much as $300 for shipping both ways.
