Wheels, if cost were no object?

Just curious, if cost were no object what wheels would you buy? Criteria:

700C road wheels, clinchers, center lock disc brakes.

Probably these:

MEILENSTEIN ? Your wheel for maximum toughness and minimum weight

Prolly some mid-depth ENVEs (I haven't shopped them enough to have a specific model in mind). My checklist would also include tubeless compatible and somewhat wide (23mm+ outside, 19mm+ inside) while still being relatively light for their depth/width.

Is the OP trying to tell us he's filthy rich?

I don't see any sideways pics of swag stashes that'd get him though a post-apocalyptic downturn of the bike industry... :foo:

ENVE SES 5.6 hoops, Chris King R45 hubs, Sapim CX RAY spokes. Under 3 grand for the pair, which is a bargain compared to Meilenstein.

Uh...no. It was a curiosity question. I'll likely end up with HED Ardennes Discs for my second set of hoops.

Would I be insulted if I knew what that meant?

:)

Custom molded rims, custom forged and CNC hubs, Sapim Super Spokes (not much customizing can be done on a spoke anyway). Tuned to my weight and riding habits.

Cost no object, right?

Ha - no. There's a poster here... username Trek[somethingoranother], iirc... that has crazy stacks of bike gear and all of his photos are sideways.

Hard to respect someone that can't post photos straight, regardless of how much carbon they have stockpiled.

I probably could afford the Enve 3.4 Discs, but to what end? I don't race, and the advantage over the HEDs would be minimal. I'll save my money.

Going disc is a major reason why I could justify carbon rims (since they're no longer a wear surface) and you can find decent mid-depth carbon wheelsets in the same price range as Ardennes... and they look more blingalicious.

Noctilux.95 01-11-18 08:51 PM

Lightweight followed by Campy Bora Ultras.

I’ve always like the Industry 9 carbons

Bob Ross 01-12-18 06:14 AM

If "cost were no object" I would not buy clinchers nor center lock disc brakes.

You wouldn't, but that's what my bike takes.

Good carbons for $1200? Disc ready? Where?

I'm drawn to the Ardennes for the relatively low weight, especially for alloy. What puzzles me about them is the odd PSI restriction of 90. I like higher pressures.

I picked up some Reynolds Assaults SLG with centerlock/AFS for that price - got them from Westbrook Cycles in the UK last Feb, but they pop up at that price range pretty frequently. If you don't need/want tubeless, Fulcrum Racing Quattro Carbon DB are almost always available for ~$1k from UK sellers.

Cost is no object? Enves. 4.5 ARs more for the width than specifically for the depth.

Cost an object? Maybe Chinese rims and a custom wheel build.

I looked at the Enve 4.5AR and with no hooked bead they're not for me. But the Enve brand seems to be very well regarded.

Your bike doesn't care how the discs attach to the hubs.

True, but I do, and I prefer center lock.
