Do you keep the dust jackets on hardcovers?

New hardcovers are out of my budget, but I sometimes get used books with jackets, which I immediately toss.

I got one from Amazon a couple of weeks ago that came all shredded. Even though I don't like dust covers all that much, I was really annoyed. You would think by now Amazon might have learned how to package a book for safe shipping.

They usually stay until they get ratty, then they go. I prefer softbacks for reading, just for the weight-- if there's the option, I'll choose softback every time. My wife has had a Kindle since the first model came out, and has bought maybe half a dozen physical books in all the years since.

Some fairly innocuous books can become fairly valuable at times - if you have the dust jacket.

I keep them, but remove them when I read the book to keep them in good shape.

Sure, I keep them. Safely under the brown craft paper homemade covers carefully secured with tape. Just like they taught us in 3rd grade. And you people better remember to fill out those cards and dates when you borrow my books.

Uh, if the card is in the little slot in the back, is it safe to assume you've lost track of the book and it is now mine?

I have a cover for my Kindle, does this count?

So YOU'RE the one who got away with my third backup copy of Anne of Green Gables.

Semi-seriously, which is all the seriously I can muster, after checking my shelves it appears most of my hardcovers still have the dust jackets. Even when they get raggedly, I'll tape 'em together. Dust jackets are easier to read at a glance than most nekkid covers. And the lettering tends to wear quickly on nekkid covers, while dust jackets remain readable for a long time despite all the shelf pulling friction and normal wear and tear. The dust jacket for my copy of Foucault's Pendulum vanished years ago. Now I'm kinda curious to remember what it looked like. Off to Google...

I take 'em off while I'm reading them so they don't get torn up but I put 'em back on when I'm done if they go on my shelf.

Confession: They annoy the hell out of me. I hardly buy any hardcovers if I can help it, but go out of my way to avoid ones with dust jackets. I've got a tome of a reference manual that's got a dust jacket. I've removed it, but it gives me guilt pangs every time I look at it. Which is why I HATE dust jackets. Ugh.

Love my dust covers, would never discard them -- unless they're already ratty. I used to purchase a plastic cover to protest my covers. :p

Sadly, can't find many hardcover books anymore. :(

p.s. A resurrection just before years end?

I have a roll of library plastic for my dust jackets, it's great stuff. A roll lasts me years.

New hardcovers are really expensive, but sometimes I can still afford it. But this is very rare.
