Tire Pump Recommendation
 

I recently bought a road bike and am in the market for a tire pump. I saw the Bontrager Charger floor pump at the Trek store and am curious if that is a decent pump or if for a occasional rider it's better getting a nicer pump. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I have a 7 year old Bontrager pump and it's great. I ride 3-4 times a week so it gets a lot of use. My pump has the gauge at the top of the pump which makes seeing it a lot easier than having the gauge at the bottom.

Mine came from REI. Has a gauge at the bottom, but works well. It gets used quite a bit and has a head for both schrader and presta. Works on my bike and my wifes trike.

I’ve got the same pump as GlennR above. I’ve had it for about 2 1/2 years. It gets used almost daily. Good floor pump.

I own some older version of the Bontrager basic floor pump with a gauge. I've used it almost every day for three years now - so far, so good!

Wet yer whistle, and catch yer stem, boys. We git'er pumped up the ole tried and truuuuue way.

I saw this fancy play in a Roebucks Catylog or something like one 100 years ago. And I don't need scuba tanks neither. Lunges of steel, boys. :thumb:

I have the Bontrager Super Charger... great pump, no issues. A bit pricier though than the standard Charger, though I think the head design is the same even if it is constructed with different outside materials.

I tried out the standard Charger last night and it seems to work fine, although I noticed when you pull the handle all the way up it doesn't seem to push much air until you're maybe 6" from the stopping point. Hmm

I have had a couple of Joe Blow pumps that both work very well . I got them at REI when they have their 20% off sale. I use them a lot and no issues. The reason I have 2 is that I ride from either my shop or my home and didn't want to be without it! They are the Sport model(yellow) and , yes , it would be better if the gage were on the top , but it has limiter markers in yellow that I set so my 64 year old eyes don't have to read the numbers. I bought 2 pumps 30+ years ago, a Medai for schrader , & a Silca Track Pump for Presta..

both use Leather cups, which get boot grease occasionally , to keep the leather soft..

+1 for the Joe Blow. I'd add that the gauge on the Joe Blows seems to be pretty accurate and reads within 1 lb. psi of my Topeak SmartGauge... assuming the SmartGauge is accurate.

I'll have to go to REI today. So overall probably skip the base Bontrager?

Bike Shop has a long stroke, tall tube Bontrager , so high compression factor, for 100 psi tires..

with less strokes..

I'm still using my 32 year old Silca Track pump. It sat for almost thirty years, so I greased the leather cup, and replaced the insert in the chuck with a new polymer one from the new Silca in the U.S. Works great.

I've been using a Joe Blow Sport since around 2006 or 2007. I purchased and installed a valve head rebuild kit once about seven years ago. So aside from the one-time rebuild of the rubber parts inside the head it has been trouble free for twelve or thirteen years.

The gauge is near the bottom. This doesn't make it hard for me to read, despite my eyes being 51 years old. There's a dial around the gauge bezel used to mark my preferred pressure to make it even easier to see. I use it two to three times a week on each of my two bikes and a couple of times a month on my kids' lower-pressure tire bikes.

There may be a better pump out there. I'm sure there is. But this one has been good enough that I can't think of a good reason to try something else.

Glad to hear it! The salesman at REI said he has 7 bikes and his lasts about 5 years. He said they have parts to rebuild it so there’s no sense in going for something better.
