Hondo Gravel rebuilding blog

Reading over all the blogs is cool. Very interesting pictures and places and progress. So today 3-6-20 I begin. Got my gravel bike ready so here I go after I down a Monster energy drink and see what happens. My last ride was in mid Nov 2019.

Hondo Gravel 03-06-20 02:41 PM

ride #1 1:37:38. 18.98 miles Avg speed 11.6 mph

A lot of rust first 30 minutes but afterwards the legs started to return. Ride #2 tomorrow.

Hondo Gravel 03-07-20 04:23 PM

Ride #2 2:41:08. 29.94 miles. Avg speed 11.1 mph

Windy and hilly ride.. I can tell I’ve had a lay-off but better than I expected.

Hondo Gravel 03-09-20 12:55 PM

No ride on Sun 3-8-20 let the old legs rest. Waiting for the rain to clear out and get out on the bike today sometime.

Hondo Gravel 03-09-20 06:26 PM

Ride #3 2:29:51. 28.10 miles. Avg speed 11.2 mph

was a wet ride with light drizzle but was fun.

Rage 03-09-20 08:24 PM

Great work getting back into the swing, Hondo!

May I ask what precipitated the long break from cycling, tho? Sorry if I am being too personal or whatever, but I feel I am missing something.

Hand operation to correct dupuytrens aka Viking Disease. Just hand operation number 11  been through plenty of comebacks. First hand operation in 1994 age 26 the latest one at 51 in 2019. Need more hand operations but not right now ...

Rage 03-10-20 09:12 AM

Oh man, eleven hand operations and counting is crazy. I’m very sorry to hear that.
I can commiserate. Had to have major surgery on my wrist after partially severing it. Was young, full of sass and vinegar and could lick twice my weight in bobcats at the time but the recovery was still a long and winding road.
I hope it is your off-hand rather’n your dominant hand.
And, as much as it must suck, it sounds pretty bad-ass.
”I got it from too much reaving back in the day.”
”It’s not so bad most of the time. Except during the full moon when I’m prone to bouts of berserker-rage.”

Looking forward to your full recovery.

Hondo Gravel 03-10-20 09:51 AM

Ride No.4 today as part of the rebuild process. Dominate hand was operated on which makes you develop the other one ... I’m more screwed up by daylight savings time

Hondo Gravel 03-10-20 03:27 PM

Ride #4 2:36:17. 29.55 miles Avg speed 11.3 mph

Lots of climbs and today I could feel the long absence from training. Now time to mow some grass.

Thanks :) It wasnít like almost severing a hand like you almost did  But yeah I get what ya sayin Iím older now and still get that Viking berserker rage and want to tear up the nearest trail to gravel road. Back in the day can still be today but with maybe a little more experience not to get injured  But with no risk these is no reward.

Hondo Gravel 03-11-20 09:09 AM

3-11-20 is yard maintenance day. 3-12, and 3-13 will be some more gravel rides.

Hondo Gravel 03-13-20 05:16 PM

3-12-20 I had to rest the manual yard labor was a workout.

Ride #5 2:29:13. 29.55 miles. Avg speed 11.8 mph

Increasing mileage soon....

Hondo Gravel 03-14-20 06:04 PM

Ride #6 . 2:56:06. 34.94 miles. Avg speed 11.9 mph

Feeling in better shape.

Hondo Gravel 03-16-20 05:33 PM

Ride #7 . 2:49:53. 33.43 miles. Avg speed 11.8 mph

warm and humid like riding in soup.

Hondo Gravel 03-17-20 02:22 PM

Ride #8 . 1:39:18. 18.57 miles. Avg Speed 11.2 mph

Today I was tired and feeling 52 years old. Very windy, warm and muggy. Decided it was best to go on a short ride. But it felt good to get out on the bike anyways.

Hondo Gravel 03-18-20 06:28 PM

Ride #9 . 2:32:46. 29.58 miles. Avg Speed 11.6 mph

Hilly ride felt a lot better today despite last nights beer party  Now to get serious with proper nutrition.

Hondo Gravel 03-20-20 12:07 PM

3-19-20 was a rest day. Drank some beer listened to some tunes. Nothing else to really do since this virus thing has everybody sheltering. It’s raining today 3-20-20 so maybe later I will get in some miles.

Hondo Gravel 03-20-20 06:00 PM

Ride #10 1:53:39 22.37 miles. Avg speed 12.0 mph

rain stopped got a hilly short ride in. Brisk north wind was fun going south downhill. Wanted more miles but the weather wasn’t cooperating.

Hondo Gravel 03-21-20 06:22 PM

3-21-20 No ride today due to rain.

Hondo Gravel 03-23-20 11:46 AM

3-23-20 going to get a ride in this afternoon. Weather clearing up. Had a two day break due to weather.

Hondo Gravel 03-23-20 05:48 PM

Ride #11 . 2:37:53. 31.85 miles. Avg speed 12.1 mph

Great to get out and ride after 2 days of being rained out. Sun came out got somewhat muggy had a brisk south wind that helped with avg speed.

Hondo Gravel 03-24-20 09:46 AM

First 10 Rides. 22:08:49 275.01 miles. Recovery isn’t as fast as it use to be :twitchy: I guess that is part of aging.

Hondo Gravel 03-24-20 04:28 PM

Ride #12 2:34:23. 32.27 miles. Avg speed 12.5 mph

Today’s ride was reminder I have a ways to go. I really felt tired and whooped. There will be days like that when coming back or training in general.

Hondo Gravel 03-26-20 10:38 AM

Wed and Thur yard maintenance and other chore. Rides 13-15 I plan for Fri, Sat and Sun. The weather will be cooler anyway. Being very isolated due to this virus thing.

Hondo Gravel 03-28-20 01:30 PM

Chores are yard maintenance a catching up on stuff now that I’m physically able to do so required Friday as well. Today Saturday I am shot  so ride #13 won’t happen until Sunday. I will get no benefit from a workout today.

Hondo Gravel 03-29-20 12:22 PM

Sunday looks like a rest day too :50: I need to recover after a full throttle manual labor festival. I needed to catch up on everything that got neglected. Went too hard starting back up but will return focused. Not in my 20s anymore though I think I am

Hondo Gravel 03-30-20 06:46 PM

Ride #13. 2 hours 50 minutes 26 seconds. 35.11 miles. avg speed 12.3 mph.

Restarted after a few days off. Isolated roads due to everything being shut down. Good ride.

Hondo Gravel 03-31-20 04:35 PM

Ride #14 3:02:33. 37.37 miles. Avg speed 12.2 mph

Brisk north wind but nice dry cool weather. Tiring ride took off with too heavy of a lunch lol.

Hondo Gravel 04-01-20 06:17 PM

Ride #15 . 3:27:54. 40.74 miles Avg speed 11.7 mph

Better feel today because I took off on an empty stomach and ate in intervals during the ride. Rain forecast for the next 7 days.
