Marin Team frame with unknown BB
Hello,
I picked up this marin on the cheap hoping to refurbish it. Wondering what kind of BB this is and what tool I need to remove it. So far the closest tool I find that matches is a Campagnolo Veloce-Mirage-Xenon square taper BB removal tool with 6 pins. https://i.postimg.cc/2jJ0s904/20190331-161032.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/brKL1dZ6/20190331-161037.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/gJtgkgmb/20190331-161048.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/6q7Y7Cp2/20190331-161113.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/jd7Mt61B/20190331-161123.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/52Wn0Ydy/20190331-161150.jpg Thanks in advance. |
parts mixed by past owner .. its a loose ball BB square taper axle type..
You show the Adjustable cup + a lock ring.. Only show the drive side, ... from a distance .. Bike shops will have the tools to remove it,* then you can put something of your choosing in to replace it.. *so you don't have to buy them to use once.. .. |
Hopefully everything isn't stuck.
A good "hook wrench" should take off the lock nut, and perhaps the fixed cup (once the adjustable cup is loose). If the threads are loose, then any pin wrench should work, or if it is loose, perhaps simply using a punch to insert into one hole and turning (hopefully no pounding). Park makes a couple of pin spanners to snag two holes at a time. https://www.parktool.com/assets/img/.../SPA-2_003.jpg https://www.parktool.com/assets/img/.../SPA-6_002.jpg |
Thanks for the tips guys. I picked up Park Tools SPA-1 and 2 yesterday and will work on the Bike again soon. Will try to post more pics of the BB.
You guys think this frame is worth saving? I am pretty sure that it is a Tange Ultimate Ultralight or similar. The wall thickness is ridiculously thin. I was thinking of having the bottle holder eyelets fixed by a frame builder that I know and then having the frame brushed again and chromed. Don't know though. |
I've got a tool like this that would undo the lock ring on the left side
https://www.wigglestatic.com/product...=430&h=430&a=7 it might undo the drive side cup [looks the same] depending on how tight it is {not forgetting it's left hand threaded] |

As far as I remember, both drive and non-drive side look exactly the same.

I'd prefer a lockring pliers for a more secure hold: http://www.os2.dhs.org/~john/var-16.jpg |
OK gents. I took the locking rings off but now can't get the BB out with these spanner tools.

That looks like an aftermarket bottom bracket, possibly a Royce or Tune. High-quality upgrade part from the mid-'90's.
I bet you're going to need a tool that engages all six holes so you can apply some torque and break loose any corrosion. With luck whoever installed it used anti-seize. Something like this Tune tool: https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/...2-6-pins-31453 https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...292c3184e0.jpg |
Ah our old friend Galvanic Corrosion has re emerged ..

No shop in the city of Zurich able to remove it? asked? (thus avoiding buying a tool used just once?)
|
Yeah, I appreciate the tip, Bob, but I like to do things myself. And like I said, I like tools! :) Been looking at replacement BB's for this one as it is slightly damaged (check out the drive side where the square taper comes through the hole). So I may just end up getting another Tune BB or something similar. I really want to try a HQ cup and cone ST BB.

might need a parts museum .. cup and cone has been relegated ..
