Dura-ace 7900 shifters w/ Ultegra 6700 front derailleur?

I recently purchased dura-ace 7900 shifters & rear derailleur. I plan on replacing my ultegra shifters and rear derailleur, but leaving the front derailleur. Will I have any compatibility issues? I can't see why it wouldn't work, as the shifters probably swing the cable relatively the same distance as the ultegra shifters. any input is appreciated.

I'm pretty sure it should work just fine. Besides, it should be easy enough to try.

Officially the 7900 shifters are only compatible with the 7900 front derailleur, and no other model (according to Shimano). The 7900 shifters are compatible with all Shimano road rear derailleurs (and MTB ones that are not marked as DynaSys), so it is the front derailleur that I would change and not the rear. I haven't tried ignoring Shimano's advice and using a FD other than the 7900 with those shifters, I expect that it would sort-of work, but just not quite perfectly. If you try it then let us know what problems it causes.

do you know what series number you got on your FD?

shimano states that it will not work, but I've read of people mating all sorts of various shimano components without any problem. I suppose the proof is in the pudding. If it fails, I'll have my LBS order a dura ace FD lickety split FD :thumb: I believe it is an Ultegra 6700 FD, I'll post the outcome on tuesday when I receive my shipment.

everything came together and the shifter works well with the ultegra fd. but, one thing I forgot about was the lack of a trim function in the dura ace shifters in the big ring. so when i'm in my 50-11 I get slight chain rub, but hardly noticeable. I assume a dura ace fd has a slightly wider cage for this reason. so it is possible to run dura ace 7900 shifters with an ultegra 6700 fd.
