Jumbo Jims 4.4 vs 4.8

I’ve currently got the 4.4 inch JJs on my fattie. When the time comes to replace them, I may got the for 4.8 inch ones.

Does anyone have experience of the differences between the two in terms of ride quality?

No experience. But for fatting around wider is better if your frame fits it.

Unless you do a 29+ wheel. Rolling resistance on pavement savings would be near zero between 4.4 and 4.8.

Note those are nominal sizes. Actual difference may be less or more than 0.4. Probably less on the same rim.

My bike came with 4.8. I wouldn't go smaller just for fear of more pedal strikes.

Before I got my B-Fat bike I was planning on getting some 4.4 jjs. I have 4.8s and 4.0s liteskins for my other 2 fatties. The 4.8s are good for the soft sand I encounter on my beaches but they are a bit too sluggish for anything else for me.

Thanks for the input, guys. I will probably end up with the 4.8 JJs eventually. No sand here, so my fat bike is used on tarmac mostly.

I wish slick fat bike tyres were a thing...

That's rather nice! I shall see whether I can source them here in the UK.

What size rims are using? You may want to try a 100mm rim if you find the 4.8s too round in profile if using an 80mm. 100mm would give you more patch contact

Rims are 80mm.
