Saved, but now what?
 

Offered for free on neighborhood LISTSERV. Went to pick it up and had to cut it out of the ivy. This is a neighborhood only 3/4 miles from the bay. What really got caught my attention is the piston like front derailleur. I am going to try and epoxy if possible with such degraded plastic. This is the first I’ve seen of this type. Seems a pretty cool design.

Probably find another derailleur as they are not very expensive. Also if you have a bike coop in your area it is a great resource for parts you may need. It looks like a great project for the winter doldrums. Joe. joesvintageroadbikes.wordpress

I rarely say this but, mostly all scrap here, FD is cracked and toast, RD and shifters likely too. The rest is pretty rusty and this was at or near the bottom of the line so....... :(

It's a mixte, unisex for all model, cool to be sure, Peugeot made many of them as did many others.

Here's a 1978 Motobecane Grand Touring that was a home run with Ms. merziac a few years ago, love them. ;)

Get out tge white rustoleum and paint it. Its very salvageable. Long cage Simplex derailleur is cool.

I see potential in the stem, cranks, rear brake caliper and the frame if you are so motivated.

Bar might be fun to de-rustify.

Derailleurs are dead, shifters not sure...the rims I remember from my first bike (a Peugeot)...not fondly.

My triage effort would probably be pulling off main assemblies and parts, just to see what's what. It might be that the stem, seat post, crank, etc. could be so salt air effected that nothing comes off. Reassess after that. Even as a "mercy build", with no thought of turning a profit, your time is worth something (meaning that less work would be needed to get another bicycle back in working order). Definitely a lot of learning there, for a newbie. Best wishes friend.

Interesting. Looks like someone tried to keep it going in the mid-1990's with a few newer bits.

If you want to try getting it running at minimal cost, swap out the FD for something usable, put another pair of stem shifters on it, and perhaps a Tektro 800A up front for decent braking (or unstick the existing calipers and throw Kool-Stops on them). After all, rust and ugliness makes for a good beater/lock-it-up bike*.

The aluminum rim up front looks a bit interesting - it has the old Raleigh Westrick cross-section. Is it 27" or 26x1-3/8?"

It's not cool. It might be the least functional ever.

I hear good things about evapo rust and it could be an experiment in rust removal,,,,, or sometimes you salvage what you can and send the frame to the scrap yard, I had a Raleigh road bike like that the seat tube was trashed beyond my ability to fix so I salvaged what I could and moved on. I would at least see if it can come a part and then go from there. Good luck.

I'd keep the front QR skewer as a spare in case I lost the other 25 I have.

Thanks for all the advice and commentary. I will start with a breakdown, try the saddle post first, then the stem, and then (yikes) see what I can do with the cottered cranks. My time is worth something, yes, but I do like taking on something like this just for the sake of getting it back on the road.If I have luck with the core issues, then I will proceed with used front derailleur, used tires, maybe even put on a couple of friction thumb shifters on the derusted handlebars (they are ugly but have a nice feel) from the local bike co-op, and get it back on the road. I don't make money from the bikes I rebuild, most of my rebuilds go to a local 403c bike group that then distributes them to agencies who deal with needy kids and adults in the area. This one I will sell on the cheap, proceeds $ will go to parts for the other worthier bikes for kids. It will be a fine beater for someone in town. Mixties are very popular here.

I just sold this one for a whole $125. The derailleurs were still good and it shifted great. On it's way to Vietnam according to the buyer. Yours looks like a challenge, good luck.

You can learn a lot with a project like that. I know when i first started messing with these old bikes i would be excited to pull that out of the weeds. Get at her and make her ride again!

That's the spirit! Don't listen to these nattering nabobs of negativism, @Nubra. I don't see anything there I'd toss, apart from the broken FD, rusted out handlebars and those crappy steel rims. Ten or fifteen hours of your time, a couple hundred bucks in parts, and you've got a decent riding bike you could sell for a good 80 bucks or so, It would be an education. :thumb:

At times i really miss that place, esp the beginning of a Seattle winter season.

edit: oh yeah, what to do with the bike? Don't rehab it too much. It is, after all, a SantaCruzin street & beach bike, likely inclined toward relapse.

Save the long cage; toss the rest of the derailleur. You can use the cage on another Simplex derailleur to extend its chain-wrap capacity.

Very nice bike. It is the same color as my daughter's Gran Jubile'. I still have it in my garage with her Raleigh . She doesn't ride anymore , she is into roller derby!? Joe

Sometimes I'm surprised by responses. If anything, as was stated by garryg, this is a learning project, and a good one.

This can be done cheaply, and still come out decent. It'll just cost time.

An angle grinder, a brass cup wire brush, and a respirator = blank canvas.

Spray or brush on some kind of finish.

Build a bike. Save the bottom bracket, stem and headset if they are still usable. Crankset looks fine from here.

That would make a nice errand bike.

I thought this site was about love for old bikes, seems some folks think it is all about making money with old bikes.
