What Hybrid Tires Are You Using?
 

I have 2 Trek 750 Multitrack bicycles that I have been restoring a 1992 lugged and a 1997 welded. The 1997 could use some new tires. I will be using this bike 70% on the road and 30% off road. I'd like a low roll resistance tire but that has enough traction to ride on dirt roads and paths in the woods. I was looking online this morning and got lost in the choices. What are Trek Multitrack and hybrid users using. I'd like to keep the cost down if that is possible. Have a good day.

I also have a '97 750 and it'll take up to about 42-44mm actual width tires. I've run Continental Speed Rides on it before, which are labeled 42mm but inflate to about 38mm. That's a great tire for a mix of road and off road use. It's light (420g), it's inexpensive ($20-25), it's foldable, it performs well, etc. It lacks robust puncture protection; it's not a touring tire, but it's also not a super thin and supple lightweight tire. I think it strikes a good balance of a lot of attributes. I'm currently using 38mm Panaracer Pasela tires on it. They're definitely more oriented to road use than off road use.

Pararacer GravelKings would probably suit you well, as well as the Vittoria Terreno Dry or Zero. I have a set of the Zeros in 47-584 size on a different bike and they're pretty nice tires. I use them off road and they work fine, but they're also wider than what you could comfortably run on at least your '97 750...and wider certainly helps with stability.

I wanted to add that my Trek 750 came to me with Trek Invert 2 tires. They look like they might be the original tires and after 24 years the rubber and sidewalls are not very compliant anymore. Does anyone agree with that? Hence the search for new tires.

Yes -- rubber will definitely harden and become less compliant with age.

If your tires are that old, be sure to get new tubes and rim strips as well.

Rim strips -- you don't know you need ones, until suddenly you get inexplicable punctures every single ride. Lesson learned the hard way, in my case.

I went with Specialized Pathfinder Pro 2Bliss Ready Tire 700 x 38 @ $49.99 at the Ski Rack in Burlington, VT. I worked there in 1969-1971 when I went to the University of Vermont.

I talked to a local bike shop S&W Sports in Concord, NH. The tech I talked to just got a pair because his fellow worker just got a pair and liked them and now he has a pair and likes them too. They didn't have them in stock, so I went with Ski Rack on Saturday and now have the tires shipped and installed on Monday. Test ride was excellent.

Those are my favorite tires. I'll also use Hutchinson Override if I can't find the Pathfinder Pro in stock, but I prefer the Specialized. I just replaced the rear tire last week with just over 6,000 miles on it, so they are very durable as well as comfortable. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

I ride mostly paved trail or gravel rail trail and use Conti Speedrides. Love 'em, and light and cheap.

38c Pathfinder Pros

32c or 42c Marathon Supreme One Star, which I stocked up on. Very nice rolling with great grip wet or dry, and good puncture resistance. The newer Addix Tour compound is a little higher resistance, and feels a little hard, but it's become a touring tire.

Just went with Continental Urban Plus on my Verve. Factory tires were awefull, These new ones are great. Ride quality is better. and much better flat protection.
