Knee and Bike Damage but riding again - at last..!
 

I had a fall (carrying fire wood) last Fall, just before I headed out for my winter riding in Jamaica. Well, the knee was shot, so no riding. And, someone had attempted to install a pedal on my bike, destroying the threads, in the poorly executed process. So the bike sat, my cane got a lot of use, and I finally started riding the motorcycle, after six weeks in Jamaica. However..

Today, after replacing the good crank set with an all steel POS VeloLion aftermarket thing, I was, pretty much good to go. So, I slipped on my new SPD bike shoes, my new half finger padded gloves and off I went.

The crank, kindaa sorts worked OK. The chain needs to be lubed and/or replaced but it worked and even allowed a bit of shifting. The bottom bracket fet gritty, and, after taking it apart, was found to be filled with aluminium filings (???). One can olny wonder where they came from. But the balls and races were pristine so in they went, then, seeking a not so great hammer and even less great screwdriver, I installed, greased and adjusted the BB. All good, now.

And that first ride put a not gonna go away soon smile on my face. Tomorrow morning, a new eight speed chain, and away for a real ride. Yahoo!

Oh yah, that old carb came off of my motorcycle and was replaced with a brand new one that, actually, works.

I'm happy to hear your knee is healing well enough to ride and you have a positive attitude. I imagine being in Jamaica helps the latter, especially now.
So now are you the Velo Lion? Lion in Winter?
For some reason, your story makes me want to see a photo of your full ride with the cane in it.

I know 'nuttin about that bikey monkey business but I'd take that cane of yours and beat whoever macked up your pedal and sabotage attempt on the bottom bracket.

Ps. Is that carb some sort of Mikuni round smooth bore? They're one of the best and simple field serviceable.

I had a tough one last year, sucks not being able to get in the saddle.

Aluminum filings ... check the seat post? Maybe parts got ground off on insertion and trickled down the seat tube?

That crankset, my friend, is ghastly.

Glad to hear your feeling better. Thank for posting the picture of the bike. The bike makes the cranks set look not so bad. I know the key thing is that you needed a crankset to ride.

Perhaps the original crankset could have the pedal threads repaired by rethreading it with a heli-coil thread?

Naw, injection is for carbon fiber bikes, carbs are C&V.

Maybe some previous owner had to saw out a stuck seat post, and just let the aluminium bits fall into the BB shell?

Glad to hear you're on the mend. In the '90s, my brother cycled across Michigan, from Detroit to Sleeping Bear Dunes park, with his ankle in a cast and crutches strapped to the frame. Took the ferry from Ludington to Manitowoc WI, got back on his bike, I picked him up (by car) in Port Washington, and we had a blast at IrishFest in Milwaukee.

I didn't realize that you'd gotten injured. Good to hear you're back to riding. I had my first experience with a forced layoff this past year as well, and I did not care for it.

While I see your point, one of the most sophisticated C&V fuel systems was Alfa Romeo's SPICA mechanical injection system. Dates from the 1940's.

Injection man? Nope, I'm married. Not much injection these days. The carb was SHOT and was fitted to my Movements motorcycle which I have named Bowel...

Those fish things are there to help with plastic bottle disposal and they REALLY work well. Just two days ago, the truck and crew came by and emptied them out. In my mind, a creative way to help protect Mother Earth and it looks good too, Looks good - anyone else know how to make plastic bottle disposal easier and more attractive...

Now you just need some blue tires on that bike.
