Help identifying this brake caliper
Can anyone tell me who made this brake caliper and perhaps about when it was made?
I need to rig up something to hold the brake cable. I have a couple of adjusting barrels that'll fit at the top but I have no idea where the cable retaining bolt and nut went.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0c50ed0143.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...42febd8a91.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...92354ac196.jpg I also have the other brake caliper. Thanks and cheers |
It looks like a Suntour aka Dia Compe brake. Maybe a Sprint?
|
Yeah looks like a duller finished version of some Gran Compe 400’s (I think) I have.
|
I don't recall Sprint having the small pin above the quick release mechanism. Offhand, the only brakesets I recall with this feature were the Dia-Compe GC500 and NGC 500.

I thought they were Shimano generics at first, like the 600s (6208). Are there any markings on the back?

The only markings besides the Gran Compe on the quick release is a 5 on one caliper, a 6 on the other.

You are very welcome. :thumb:

I bought a set of brakes like these a few years ago and asked over on Classic Rendezvous. I think the conclusion was that they were Chinese Gran Star - a Dia-Compe knock-off.

@natterberry has NGC 400 or 500 brakes. OP's are something different possibly a clone but I've never seen that quality out of China from the 80's.

For anyone interested in this. I just found an exploded view of the Suntour RGC80 brake caliper that looks just like the ones I have.

Do you happen to have that full document? I bought the 160’s on the right along with my calipers.
|
IF they have no markings on there not Shimano or Suntour, So considering the nice quality likely late 80's Sram or Mavic.

I saw a couple of other posts after I posted the exploded parts diagram but now don't see those posts. Weird. In one of them someone asked if I had the complete document. Here's the link to the page where I got the diagram. That page has many diagrams of various Suntour brake calipers and brake levers. I hope it helps. I got lucky today. I bought a NOS air of those calipers COMPLETE for only $15.00 Canadian!

Just to be pedantic, your brakes don't match the exploded diagrams. NGC's always had black rubber pugs in the brake nut. Lesser models, no.
Still congrats on the score, they look like fine brakes. |

Still congrats on the score, they look like fine brakes. They do have very strong springs though. They'll work fine for what I want and at an excellent price. Cheers |
