26x5 tires?
 

just curiousity as an alt-biker who likes odd/unusual/weird things. every once in a while i read someone mention using a 5" wide fat bike tire (seems like i read 6" once or twice also). just wondering what it takes to use one. purpose built bike that uses them? wider than 100 mm rim? does a bottom bracket need to be wider or offset to the drive side (seen a few 29x3's made that way)?

like i said, just curious. i have a sturmey wide 3sp hub i'm wanting to work with (figuring not working with a derailleur might make it easier) and liking the extra wide option, if costs and workability aren't too crazy. thanks for any info.

I have been thinking about building up a Sturmey Archer SX-RK3. It is made for 170mm drop outs and is 36 hole hub. It will be used on my Munzie 616 which limits the tires size to about 4". I just can't seem to find many options on 36 hole fat bike rims. I only see a few offered here and there on ebay. I believe all fat bikes that can use 5" plus tires will have 197mm drop outs. Most fat bikes bottom bracket (shell width) are 100mm and some are 120mm.

yeah that's the hub I have, I think. got a 3sp Schwinn chopper wheel and don't think I want to work with the 20" size. since I'm wanting to go up to 26" I might as well look into wider too. most likely i'll use it on a single speed mongoose beast I picked up used if I can't come up with (or afford if it gets costly) a more interesting option.

There are snowshoe 3xl's (26x5.6) in existence.

There's a thread on mtbr about a custom Quiring bike built around the superfat tires. It involved cutting and welding up a 217mm rear hub.

Keep in mind that wider doesn't necessarily mean better. Remember you need to actually pedal the bike, and the wider the tire the harder it will be. Unless you have an ebike. But fat ebikes are typically made for 4" tires.
