Someone explain to me the no-gloves trend that I keep seeing

So this is another trend that I've been seeing...

What's up with the no-gloves trend that I keep seeing? I think I started this trend over a decade ago being a minimalist. But after suffering on the Gavia and living to tell about many other epic rides without major crashes where my palms could have been ripped apart I have grown older and wiser and now wear gloves.

However, I see a huge trend of many roadies around here with no gloves. I also saw this in the Peloton in this year's TdF? Why is no-gloves so cool now? Looking back I was very foolish and lucky to not have worn gloves.

Please explain and show proof of your work. There will be a test at the end.

Since the concept of this post flew over many people's heads...

Yeah, seems like wider neck ties with big knots are coming back too. I will always prefer the skinny neckties and knots.

WhyFi 09-21-20 02:58 PM

Because it feels better without 'em. Wearing them is like taking a shower while wearing a raincoat.

You spend way too much time worrying about what other people are doing, just ride your bike. :thumb:

Which is why I started this trend. Have many battle scars from not wearing gloves and now it's better to just wear gloves. Have tried many gloves and have found that these cheapo retro-style gloves just work. That's probably why they used these for decades and decades--it's like single-malt scotch. Why try to change what works...

I've ridden more miles than you have been alive.

No glove, no love

tyrion 09-21-20 03:04 PM

People are keeping their gloves in their handlebar bags so they don't get dirty.

?

That's like saying "I'm older than you are tall!" or "I weigh more than you have teeth!"

Personally, gloves have never saved me. Just comfort while holding bars. Honestly, (and perhaps embarrassingly) I just feel cool wearing gloves. Its a nice accessory, but I never thought of them as a necessity. They dont REALLY provide anything for me. Mountain or Road setting.

genejockey 09-21-20 03:07 PM

I tried going without gloves but my hands slide around on the tape when they get sweaty, so that experiment ended right quick.

rubiksoval 09-21-20 03:10 PM

In the winter it's too cold to ride without gloves. In the summer it's too hot and sweaty to ride without gloves. Fall and spring seem to only last about 3 hours each.

So, I always wear gloves.

Oooh, nice!

Keep training and you might crack 100 miles, yet!

That has what to do with being all bothered about how other people are riding?

Well, this guy wears gloves and a $168,000 + watch, so, that's what's actually cool.

Don't think there's a specific reason why other than personal preference.

I always preferred wearing gloves for the comfort and crash protection.

rubiksoval 09-21-20 03:16 PM

More gloves, but cheaper watch:

The explanation is simple. Some people prefer not to wear gloves. I don't think it requires any explanation beyond that.

And just because you saw a few people without gloves, it doesn't necessarily make it a trend.

I feel the same about jerseys and shorts. :thumb:

I prefer my $10 Casio watch but not likely to start a trend.

Have you tried not crashing?

surak 09-21-20 04:39 PM

I'm in the cold fingers/sweaty palms category, so gloves for me always, but other than some people preferring the feeling of bare skin on bar tape, there's also folks who don't want to proudly show off their weird glove tan.

caloso 09-21-20 04:55 PM

I'll wear them for racing mostly. I rarely wear gloves on training/commuting/JRA rides. As for bar tape, I really like the Fizik microtex. Never had an issue losing grip with sweaty hands.

Carbonfiberboy 09-21-20 05:04 PM

Like a lot of male BS, no gloves is about bravado. I was once in a minor paceline crash behind a proud no-gloves riding buddy. He went hands-first into the pavement. Still rides w/o gloves. Beats me.They'll say that it's about bike feel or some such nonsense, but we know what's really going on. Or maybe I'm totally wrong. Any women on here ride no-gloves?
