Official BF Eroica California 2020 Roll Call!

Edit: July 22, 2020
Per an update emailed today, Eroica California 2020 officially cancelled due to the pandemic and health concerns for domestic and international participants, Cambria residents, and California. Also because international travel is still dicey and restricted. All registrations will be moved to the next date, tentatively sometime in April 2021, assuming that date is workable. As always, stay tuned to your emails. If you want to transfer your registration to someone else, that is possible, but there are no refunds per Eroica's regulations.

Edit: April 10, 2020

per an update today on the Eroica California Facebook page, here is information on rescheduled dates:

We are delighted to announce the new dates for the 2020 Eroica California, September 25-27, in beautiful, sunny Cambria and we look forward to greeting everyone for another Eroica weekend, with Nova on Saturday and Classic Sunday.

See you there!

Ok, time to check in for Eroica California 2020 registrations. I'm collating separate CR and BF attendee Google spreadsheets (and yes, there will be some overlap) to gauge attendance and interest for the 2020 event. I hope everyone has encouraged someone they know or met to attend and ride. Hopefully, we'll exceed the 900+ Classic Eroica riders and the 200+ NOVA Eroica riders of 2019. I understand that many of the teething problems of last year’s first time in Cambria are being addressed so let’s support the ride organizers, and the Cambria organizers to make this 2020 event a great one!

I strongly suggest volunteering in some capacity this year to help things run smoothly. With over a thousand participants, your help can go a long way to making the event go smoother. I’ll post links for that later in the thread.

For the purposes of the spreadsheet please list the following info. You can copy, fill in and paste the info below to your reply if that makes it easier. If you wish to send it to me privately, please send to mech986 at Yahoo dot com or in a direct private message. All information will remain confidential. Ifyou wish to be contactable from other members who don't already have your info, let me know. I will furnish links to anyone in the group who would like to see the spreadsheet. I'll try to publish an abridged version without contact info here to advise who is on the list although editing is difficult.

1. First name, Last name, CR or BF name, email address (optional), phone number (optional), City, State. If you already gave me your email or phone previously, state “sent prev” And I’ll pull from last year’s info.

2. Route (35 Piedras Blancas (PB), 75 Santa Lucia (SL), 82 La Villa Dello Scalatore (LVDS), 110 Heroic (H) ).

3. Primary Riding Bike - year, Make, Model. Color (optional). Additional Bikes for Display (DIS) or Concours (CC).

3A. New info request this year - F/R gearing (Ex. 52/42/26 - 14-32 5 speed), Tires and sizes (ex. - Compass Bon Jon Pass EL 700Cx35), How good a climber are you - (Exc, Good, Fair, Poor, Flats only!)

4. Planned dates of arrival and departure and Where you be staying? If you need help with or wish to share accommodations, please state what you are looking for - room, house, camping, and which local town (Cambria, Cayucos, San Simeon, Paso/Templeton or SLO.). We can use this thread or start another thread to assist with matching up folks and needs.

5. Any additional activities - Volunteering, Swap vendor, Display, concours, judging, pre-race rides, Friday BBQ or Saturday Eroica Cena dinner, etc.

Thanks for all your input and hope to see everyone who is attending. I hope everyone has already sorted out their ride and dinner reservations on the new myeroica.cc site.

I know it will be a lot of fun, suffering, and a true challenge.

Bart

Manny66 07-14-19 02:24 PM

Manny Here, I spoke with you at the Rose Bowl Vintage ride and Like I already said, You can count me in 100% for next year.

Will be doing both the Nova and The 110 Heroic.

Will be riding a 1980's Moser SL and a 1970'sWindsor Profesional, and Will have a early 50's Automoto for Display.

Arrival date is Thursday Evening til late Sunday nite.

mech986 07-14-19 04:43 PM

Excellent Manny66 and Gugie!! I know we have a bunch of folks already signed up in the early bird registration so I suspect they'll be along shortly.

As for me:

1. First name, Last name, CR or BF name, email address (optional), phone number (optional), City, State. If you already gave me your email or phone previously, state “sent prev” And I’ll pull from last year’s info.
Bart Y., mech986, Orange County, CA.

2. Route (35 Piedras Blancas (PB), 75 Santa Lucia (SL), 82 La Villa Dello Scalatore (LVDS), 110 Heroic (H) ).
Most likely Santa Lucia and goal is to cut 1 hour off my 2019 time. However, if I really train well, may do the LVDS Coastal

3. Primary Riding Bike - year, Make, Model. Color (optional). Additional Bikes for Display (DIS) or Concours (CC).
Either my brown original 72 Italvega Super Special, a Blue 72 Italvega Super Special with a different gearing/tire/wheel setup, or either a 74-76 mist green or Pearl White later Italvega Super Special or Superlight respectively depending on how they build and ride out.

3A. New info request this year - F/R gearing (Ex. 52/42/26 - 14-32 5 speed), Tires and sizes (ex. - Compass Bon Jon Pass EL 700Cx35), How good a climber are you - (Exc, Good, Fair, Poor, Flats only!)
For now, the same 52/42/28 - 14-30 5 speed Campy Triple drivetrain with the Compass Bon Jon Pass EL 700Cx35 clinchers, have been very reliable and comfortable. Currently a poor to fair climber, hope to get incrementally better over the next 6 months.

Arriving Thursday April 2 and staying through April 9, 2020 - making a week of it so family can continue exploring Cambria and the California Central Coast. Staying at the same Cambria VRBO property handicap accessible home we used last year.

5. Any additional activities - Volunteering, Swap vendor, Display, concours, judging, pre-race rides, Friday BBQ or Saturday Eroica Cena dinner, etc.
Hope to be able to provide some volunteering time, being a buyer at the swap (wife will love that!), and have reservations for the Saturday Eroica Cena dinner. Might consider the BBQ as well if there's room. No concours or display bikes this year but willing to help set up. Pre-race rides optional.

How's about you??

If you wanna ride up Turnball Canyon and then up Colima Road sometime, Let me know. I do a out and back route that gets some good climbing in. Manny

Classtime 07-15-19 11:59 AM

1. Jeff. H. (El Jeffe in2019)
2. Doing both the Nova and Heroic rides.
3. Nova on contemporary tigged steel not-a-gravel-bike with spds, 48/34 and 11-28 with 28s. Or my new since 9/24/19 Ironman Classic.
Heroic on a ‘84 Turbo with 52/42 and 13/24 on 25s OR because some riders missed my ‘81 Medici with same gears and tires, I might ride it instead.
4. Driving up on Thursday night and leaving sometime after Monday morning. (Maybe the PNW gang will be riding north and I’ll tag along since this year, spring break follows Eroica.)
5. I’m contributing by bringing 2 bottles

Spaghetti Legs 07-15-19 12:21 PM

1. Hugh, SpaghettiLegs, Charlottesville, VA

2. Route - Probably LVDS - thinking of being a hero.

3. Primary Riding Bike - Next year will likely be the '84 Basso Gap. It will need to be tweaked but will have Super Record

3A. I'm a good climber. Not sure on gearing yet - will probably have 6 speed 13-26 or 28 freewheel. If legs are strong will have the Campy 53-42, if not, I'll put on the VO 46-34. Tires will be probably be 27 mm Gravel Kings.

4. Arrive Friday, leave Monday. This year I visited my son in LA then drove up on Friday. that worked well, so will probably do that again.

5. Any additional activities - No plans on special activities other than meet and greet and catch up with friends. I recognize and appreciate all the volunteers but I'll be coming a long way for a short time so will spend it either riding or seeing friends.

@ Manny66 - Rock it out with the Moser! Here's mine from this year.

Kabuki12 07-16-19 04:38 AM

Bartly, I have already registered and will probably stay at the San Simeon Campground. I am riding the short route Piedras Blancas. I am as yet not sure of the bike , but , maybe it is time the Raleigh had a turn? 1977 Raleigh Competition GS, I will probably change the freewheel for the event and maybe some wider tires as 23's aren't suitable. 1977 Raleigh Competition GS

Thalia949 07-16-19 07:22 AM

I'm planning to ride it but have not settled on which bike. Tuscany 2019 will likely determine what bike is best for me.

route will either be the heroic or Santa Lucia. I will likely not do the NOVA.

Lodging and other TBD

mech986 07-23-19 02:32 AM

Bumping for additional entries.

davester 07-23-19 10:24 PM

1. Dave D, davester, Berkeley CA

2. Route - LVDS

3. Primary Riding Bike - Once again I'll be riding the white and red Ron Cooper. Scratch that...looks like I'll be riding my new to me red1982 Raleigh International. It has rack mounts so that I can carry luggage on the ride from SF to Cambria. It has the gearing and tires to conquer those hills and the ride down (see 5b below).

4. I'm a good climber if I have decent gears. 6 speed 13-30 freewheel. Ofmega Triple 50-42-24. Tires will be 27x1-3/8" Swifttire San Canyons.

5. Arrive Friday, leave Sunday. I will be at an airbnb house with wife and friends.

6. Additional activities...Bigtime!

a. This will be the 4th year that I will lead the "Marinica" pre-Eroica warmup ride on the Saturday before the main event. Come along and tour the verdant beauty of western Marin County, north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

b. Following Marinica, I am hoping from Tuesdaythrough Friday to ride the Cooper in the company of Gugie and other adventurous BF members down the coast from Marin to Cambria, arriving just in time to spend an evening relaxing before attending the concours. This is expected to be an epic credit-card tour punctuated by fabulous scenery and marvelous dining.

gaucho777 07-23-19 11:40 PM

It's been a few years since my one and only Eroica CA, but I'm definitely in for 2020. Some of the travel plans depend on whether I fly solo or bring the family along.

1. First name, Last name, CR or BF name, email address (optional), phone number (optional), City, State. If you already gave me your email or phone previously, state “sent prev” And I’ll pull from last year’s info.
Randy Heyman, gaucho777, Berkeley, CA. (PM for contact info.)

2. Route (35 Piedras Blancas (PB), 75 Santa Lucia (SL), 82 La Villa Dello Scalatore (LVDS), 110 Heroic (H) ).
Most likely the 82 La Villa Dello Scalatore

3. Primary Riding Bike - year, Make, Model. Color (optional). Additional Bikes for Display (DIS) or Concours (CC).
My Eroica bike will most likely be a '72 Cilo Pacer with various upgrades. I could possibly be coaxed into bringing a '72 Speedwell Titalite for display (DIS).

3A. Gearing: 53/36 - 13-26 5-speed.
Tires and sizes: Dugast 32mm tubulars
How good a climber are you: Fair

4. Planned dates of arrival and departure:
Arriving late on Friday, April 3. Most likely leaving Monda, April 6. (I have to work on Friday, April 3, but April 6-10 is Spring Break, so departure date is tentative.)

5. Additional activities:
Again, a lot depends on whether I fly solo or come with the family. Definitely interested in at least swap, pre-ride, and Concours. I wish I could join @gugie, @davester, and others for the credit card ride down the coast but I know I'll be stuck at work that week.

Brad L 07-30-19 12:55 AM

1. Brad L, Brad L (obviously), Cypress, TX

2. Route - LVDS

3. Primary Riding Bike - Unknown at this point. I plan on renting locally so I'm at the mercy of what's available. If anyone knows of where to rent besides Wally's, PM me.
My local vintage ride is my 1969 Colnago with full NR with 41/52 and 14-24. It took too long to find so it's a fair weather only bike. I have an 83 Gitane I plan on building into an Eroica bike.

3a. I'm a flatlander but I've got decent hills to train on within an hour's drive. Looks like I'll be spending a lot of time out there this winter.

4. I'll arrive Friday morning and leave Monday. EDIT - I have a room at the Cambria Palms Motel, which, I believe, is about as close to the start location as possible.

5. I've signed up for the Saturday dinner, will be hitting the swap meet for any last minute needs/wants, and checking out the Concours.

This is a birthday present to myself for beating cancer (yet again), so I might as well jump in the deep end.

mech986 08-07-19 03:27 PM

Welcome Brad, if you check my 2019 Eroica California thread, we had another Texan drive out (!) to enjoy Eroica. Happy to have you visit California and congrats on beating cancer again!

Manny66 09-29-19 09:55 PM

Has anyone stayed in neighboring San Simeon during the LEroica event?

Looking to book a room and wondering if its too far from all the happenings in Cambria.

It's only 10 miles up Hwy 1 (PCH for the SoCal folk), and hotels are about half the price of Cambria.

BTW, @Spaghetti Legs was at Eroica last year with his Moser. Bob Freeman, man of literally 100+ fully restored vintage bikes and Eroica Concurs judge took one look at that Moser and immediately told Hugh that the top derailleur pulley was wrong, ergo my comment.

mgopack42 09-30-19 06:05 AM

in the summer of 2017(?), I stayed at a place in San Simeon, for an event in Cambria. I booked last minute, and it was a well maintained place, just across from the Ocean. I think it was called Courtesy Inn. for the money it was great, and it was more like 5 miles from Cambria.

Kabuki12 09-30-19 11:02 AM

I stayed at the Cavalier Inn in San Simeon last year and it was great. It is a short ride in to the event if you want to ride , and who wouldn't given the scenery! We were in a room with a fireplace and could listen to the ocean while we slept. My wife and I have been going there for over 25 years and it is very well maintained . Also fire pits out by the cliff for that beach fire effect. Joe joesvintageroadbikes.wordpress

I am interested in participating in this event next year.

Not sure of the criteria or bicycle vintage requirements. What is the age requirement of the bike? Thanks

There is no age requirement for the bike. A brand new steel framed bike with toe clips and straps and friction shifters might still qualify (see rules)

The requirements have become suggestions. Get a nice road racing bike from the 70's or early 80's and don't modify it in any way that wouldn't have been done back in the day. We have 6 months to train with gears too tall and tires too skinny. I'm jealous of anybody shopping for an Eroica bike. Great prices here in SoCal.
