Rear derailleur adjustment

Hello, I am currently fitting a 1 by 10 drivetrain to my Giant talon. Ive ran into an issue during adjusting my 10 speed SLX rear derailleur r. It fails to shift to the largest ring on the cassette. I’ve tried adjusting the low limit screw to no avail. The cage doesn’t seem to be moving when I turn the screw. Is there anything I should be doing in order to make this work? All the components are new. All help would be appreciated. I am also using an SLX 10 speed shifter, deore hg-x chain, raceface narrow wide chainring 34t, and a sunrace 10 speed 11-42 cassette.

Did you loosen the cable before you adjust the screws? Are your shifters 10 speed compatible?

The largest cog on the cassette is the lowest gear, so I hope you are talking about the low limit screw. Also, the derailleur may not move further in if there is not sufficient tension on the cable.

Six speed der? Even with the narrower cog to cog spacing the 10 speed cog set is wider then the 6 speed one is so the der will have to have the swing/travel capacity to reach all that way inward. Have you tried to use your hand to push the der across the cog set (no cable or shift lever at play yet)? Even without the chain on one can tell a lot by this "dry run". Of course any 6 speed der isn't meant to be compatible with any shift lever that's indexed beyond the OEM 6 spec.

But there's a lot on info missing. To start with what's a "slx read derailleur"? Could you go back and re ask with more info? Brands, models, shifters, wheel/hub, cog set? Andy

Do I need to loosen cable tension on the rear derailleur before adjusting limit screws? My rear derailleur and shifter are 10 speed SLX Shimano, sorry for the confusion. I have moved my rear derailleur by hand and without the chain and it moves through the full motion.

You don't need to remove tension on the cable to adjust the LOWER (inner) limit screw.

Is the lower limit screw referring to when the derailleur cage is over the largest casette gear(aka the 42 tooth on mine)?

Follow this procedure: https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair...eur-adjustment
Loosen the shift wire from its clamp screw and proceed as if it is a new installation. Finish each step properly before you proceed and do not skip any steps.
My guess is that you did not have your shifter in the highest gear (most relaxed shift wire) position when you attached the wire.

Alright, ill go test that. The other thing I'm concerned about is the position my derailleur is in mounted on the frame. I tried to line It up with the angle of the old one, but I might be off. Does a slight position change affect the way the derailleur moves in any way? Thx for the help.

Yes, lower refers to the gear ratio or gear number, which is lower for a larger rear cog.
