Bikesdirect Mini Velo upgrade thread

So folks are already talking about various upgrades they will be doing to their mini velo in the announcement thread. For friendliness to future surfers, perhaps those discussions should go here instead (preferably with links to parts ordered etc...).

So far I'm only planning on replacing tires (Schwalbe slicks) and brake pads. But if the front derailleur is complete junk I'll probably swap that as well (recommendations?).

Dynocoaster 05-13-11 06:52 PM

I would like to know what tire sizes will fit these rims. How low and high can we go with tire sizes.

Dynocoaster 05-13-11 06:54 PM

To match the rear derailleur and front Sora can be had for $18 plus shipping http://www.google.com/products/catal...25&os=sellers#

Thanks. I'll probably do that!

I'm thinking a Nitto Technomic stem.

and a double: http://cgi.ebay.com/SHIMANO-SORA-FC-...item4aa23f2737

Same here. Or the Dynamic, if I end up not needing that much stem height.

That's a beautiful crankset. I have a Sugino RD-48 on my Swift.

punkgeek 05-14-11 03:33 PM

I've got one of those Sugino cranksets on the way. I wanted to shift the gearing a little lower anyway (hills).

Dynocoaster 05-14-11 05:44 PM

I have been thinking about getting these handlebars. http://www.treefortbikes.com/product...Handlebar.html

Dynocoaster 05-14-11 06:09 PM

Will a 20X1.10 fit this rim? I am thinking of getting the Schwalbe Durano Mango.

fietsbob 05-15-11 01:53 AM

Have they even shipped yet?

Dynocoaster 05-15-11 08:30 AM

Yes, and several people have received them. Here on the Left coast ours are due Tuesday May 17th.

Traitor Cycles has these for sale, is it a good deal? http://cgi.ebay.com/Tektro-R358-Road...item4cf4029a2e

Yeah, considering new they go for $20+ each. Should measure the reach of the stock brake calipers before you order, just to be sure you have the right model.

I thought about getting new calipers at first when I decided that I'd get the most bang for the buck if I simply replaced the stock brake pads instead. Got a set of Jagwire Comp road brake pads for cheap.

Where can I get some high performance wheels in the 406 size?

The Dahon Kinetix rear wheels (Comp and Pro) have the correct spacing to fit the Nano, but not sure about their front wheel (Dahon is 74mm and I think the Nano uses the standard road bike 100mm spacing).

762x54 05-16-11 08:27 PM

Yes, the Nano front is 100 mm. There's a good looking wheelset on Amazon for $30.00 + shipping but the front is 74 mm and I think they take the 451 tires.

You could build them..
Bike Friday and Brompton both offer a 74mm axle front hub.
24 and 28 spoke-holes..
Phil Wood can offer one too ..

then pick the rim and lace them up. or hire the work out.

Is this the wheelset? I don't see any specs other than its a 20 inch wheel. Shipping is almost $30, but I am still curious. An extra wheelset would be nice.

Dynocoaster 05-16-11 10:10 PM

I found that one also but couldnt find any specs.

762x54 05-17-11 05:01 AM

That's the one. I talked with the seller and he quoted specs of 20 x 1 1/8, 74mm wide. He didn't seem very knowledgeable about bikes in general. I decided not to gamble, but it looks like a good wheelset for only $60.00, if they will work.

Anybody know if 20 x 1.10 tires will work with these rims? I'm hesitant to order new tires before knowing for sure.

Dynocoaster 05-17-11 07:54 AM

Marathon racer 20X1.50 $24.95 http://www.utahtrikes.com/PRODINFO-S...acer_Tire.html
