Latest news has Bouhanni back in the mix. No breaks, just cartilage damage ("just..."). Bummer to hear about Kittel, he was entertaining. I've read he's taken it quite hard and is considering terminating his contract as a result of not being selected. Nonetheless, might open the door for some new faces to win/contend sprints.

not sure if should have put this in the music thread or the....well i have no idea. So i'm gonna drop the mic right here |
I wonder how hard Cav's leadout train is going to work for him after today...
|
I didn't see the stage, just read the short write up on VeloNews. Based on the guys in the top 10, I'm surprised he was up there at all.
[h=2]Top 10, stage 2[/h]
What happened? |
Renshaw ran out of steam early and Cav had no choice but to start with 300m to go. He also ran out of steam and beating Greipel on a long wide flat sprint is iffy anyway.
|
I was just surprised to see five TT guys - including Froome - in the top ten. Greipel and Cav were the only sprinters...and Cancellara beat Cav in a sprint? Sheesh.
|
Cancellara was never a bad sprinter. Especially when everyone is tired like at the end of a classic style race (today was pretty much that). Additionally, the lead group broke up at the end and Froome chose the better wheel to follow. He ended up gaining 4 seconds on Contador as a result.
Cav kind of sat up at the line too. He looked clearly demoralized when Greipel went by him. |
Chuck, crosswinds and eschelons were the order of the day, which blew the field into three main groups. The last two rejoined but the lead group stayed away. Renshaw went like he had another helper behind him which put Cav head to head with Greipel too far out. Cancellara masterfully surfed wheels to just beat him. This pretty much ensures that the flat stages will be like Cat4 races and thT things are going to get interesting in the mountains.

Grumpy and shovel - thanks!
|
on Twitter cav said he didn't sit up.. but it sure looked like it.
fun stage (to watch). was it just wind that caused the split? on tv it seemed like it happened during a commercial. speaking of, does the "Toyota loves bicycles" ad come on in other areas during nbc's tdf coverage? I'm in it! |
i watched it on eurosport, wind and also maybe Adam Hansen's crash. look at tejay on the right side of the split

his team bury themselves for him so often. not racing for 3rd really screwed martin. betting he never expected someone else (much less cancellara) to be there at the finish after greipel and sagan surged, but that's not the point. greipel beating him was probably all that Cav was thinking of. he seems to really detest greipel. amazing that sagan comes back and still takes 2nd. |
WTF is with the neutralizing of the race?

re: cav losing the yellow jersey for tony, it actually seems better not to have to defend a jersey they won't hold on to anyway, at least from cav's perspective. it would make for good pictures but not really a good strategy.
plus it would only distract cav's team from helping him win stages. gotta focus. |
I think this tdf stage report is written in English, but I'm not 100% sure. I know most of the words but I only understand about half the sentences.
|
Also... time bonuses are back apparently?
|
yes, and i don't like them. ugh...

managed to not get spoiled on the results today. just watched. sweaty palms watching the finish. loved it.
|
That crash was awful. It was the right move to neutralize, and a good compromise to restart. They didn't have to.
|
great stage, except for the carnage.
also, loved seeing froome lean on guys! |

Prudhomme made the right call. "The race must go on" is all fine and dandy until someone dies because medical personnel were 10km behind them when they clip a light pole the wrong way. |
I agree it was the right call. My post was real-time because the NBC feed (ugh...just UGH) wasn't saying anything, and they weren't explaining why it was being neutralized.
