Buddy gave me his 73 Paramount as a late birthday present recently.

Reading this and with a little confirmation from the Steel is Real Facebook group, I am confident in calling this a p10-9. S/N# M72255. This is what my buddy had to say, "Yea, it's a P10-9. The guy I bought it from worked at a Schwinn dealer in the 70s in Chicago.
He wanted the racing model, but this frame sat for over a year and the owner sold it to him cheap,
then he built it up with the Nuovo Record stuff from another Paramount but with the bar ends instead.
He unfortunately did not keep the original parts as part of the deal."

While doing a bit of re-assembly I hit a snag.

The clamps for the brake levers don't seem to be fitting. Tell me it ain't so! Any suggestions?

Cobble, fabricate, sub in different levers or bands that fit or change the bars and stem if necessary.

At least in the short term, this would have slowed me down for all of 5 minutes, well maybe 10. :roflmao2:

When that has happened to me a couple times, I filed the end of the bar a tiny bit to get the band to fit, then it was easy to push up from there.

Yeah, dia compes are what will happen if I can't get the clamps to fit, but I hope it doesn't come to that though because I'm trying to not spend any money on this besides consumables like cables.

Oh I know, got a couple pair that I have taken off, my 58 even came with "upgraded" Schwinn approved ones that the PO had installed for comfort.

Almost NOS and the real deal, many of these came with them AND Twin Stick stem mounted shifters, saw them in person back in the day. :roflmao:

You don't need to file the bars, you can open them slightly...There is a tool made specifically for this but I have used a socket ( all of my Craftsmen's have a slight bevel on either end). Find one that is just a little larger than the clamp ring, push it in and move up a size if the dia. is still too small.
Works every time..Good luck.

Keep it Campy! Here is my 1974 P10-9 , that is mostly all original. except for tires/tubes , Chain and cables.

I think bar tape is either original or was installed in the 70's .

I got this from the original owner who got it with campy brakes.

That’s happened to me, not the free Paramount part unfortunately, but using a hammer and tapered metal dowel has worked every time, in opening the clamp up a bit.

Great suggestion, thanks! I pulled out my sockets, got through 16 and 17, but my harbor freight socket kit doesn't have an 18mm. But I know my dad does!

Oh yeah! Campy all the way! I've got a pair of SR cranks that I'm gonna put on here and if I can find a campy dt clamp, some campy downtube shifters.

He must be a VW/Audi owner. :) That's about the only place I have found a use for the 18mm socket I bought open stock.

Far from it! We are a Japanese car family. Even the one American car they have is really a Toyota in a GM suit.

He just has a well stocked tool chest.
