Bike Snob...

Is it just me or has Ethan put his advocacy issues on the back burner?

I always enjoyed his take on the way cyclists are treated in comparison to others. He used to regularly write about the poor treatment of people riding bicycles by the NYPD (and drivers in general) but these ruminations seem to be far and few between these days

Eben

I think "Outside" suspended his column. Much to his credit.

??
Any details or backstory as to why "Outside" suspended his column and/or why the suspension is much to his credit?

They are fairly right-wing, and this is purely speculation on my part, but titles like

Bikes Should Be Used for Revolution—Not Police Violence

might have annoyed them.

Hmmm. I'm not sure what to think about Outside and Eben considering the other articles that Outside has published.

Personally I prefer to see everyone's input. There is no law that says you have to like it.

Too bad BIG TECH does not believe that.

You know what I like about Outside? Some folks on the right think it's too liberal and some folks on the left think it's too conservative.

Which suits my moderate independent self just fine.

No offense intended to anyone here in this thread. Peace. :)

Seems that way.

"In an age when we’re told to see every neighbor as a disease vector, and every police officer as a potential racist murderer, and every unseasonably warm day as yet more evidence that we’re all going to perish in an environmental apocalypse of our own making, I’ve never felt more strongly that by far biggest threat to all of us is not illness, or police brutality, or climate change; rather, it’s our pathological insistence on shaming each other, and on spurning happiness and beauty, and on rejecting everything around us as intrinsically insidious. In 2020, it is possible to feel guilty for simply being alive. Actually, it’s more than possible–increasingly, it’s political dogma.

I realize it’s easy to read this as a half-a**ed manifesto on apathy. (Is there any other kind?) However, I believe it’s ultimately joy and not guilt that drives the best human endeavors. It’s far better to tell someone they’ll love riding a bike than it is to tell them they’re a s****y person if they don’t. I’d also humbly submit we at least consider liberating ourselves from the medieval notion that humanity is fundamentally sinful and unclean and eternally one more misstep away from some sort of cosmic retribution."

You still are getting cred (for whatever it's worth), just when width resize happens, you scroll off edge left. Here you are in all your glory:

I used to think he was hilarious back when he dunked on "fixie culture," but he's long since lost whatever appeal he once held for me. I'm just not that interested in NYC commuting, child-rearing, and handlebar reviews. His edge has dulled considerably.

I'm starting to question whether the invention of the internet was a good thing.

This is a beautiful sentiment, and it embodies my interest in reading varied posts. Every person has the right to be offended. That shouldn't be cause for restricting speech by anyone. I can sort out what seems true. I like to think that most people can do likewise.

They were killed off by COVID-1 through 18.
