Riding brakeless - what is the ADVANTAGE?

The coolness factor doesn't count as an advantage.

steveymcdubs 08-15-09 11:38 PM

street cred brah

dayvan cowboy 08-15-09 11:40 PM

there is no advantage.

That being said, riding brakeless is fun. I've been doing it for the last few days and its fun riding through traffic knowing you have to pay extra attention, but that added excitement is a compromise you have to make because you can't go as fast, its more dangerous because you can't stop as fast, and you have to pay a lot more attention.

honestly, in the few days i've been riding brakeless commuting(2 miles each way) i haven't skidded once. I've never found it a practical way to stop/slow down in actual traffic.

1) If someone steals your bike they may get hurt in the accident.
2) No one will steal your bike as it has no brakes.

Fact: Riding without brakes improves sperm count.
And thereby, a rider's reproductive fitness.

squeegeesunny 08-16-09 12:12 AM

I guess hospitals are happy about an influx of young, relatively healthy organ donors.

Huh?

sanderswm 08-16-09 01:11 AM

Riding brakeless is dangerous and serves no effectively arguable purpose. Brakeless riders will say it makes the riding more engaging, is just as effective as riding with brakes, and will equate it to a higher state of manliness, ie "brakes are for kids" or "when you grow up you graduate to brakeless" etc etc. Perhaps you might even hear that the lack of brakes is cooler or makes the bike lighter. Aside from that you will get 7 pages of BF members bickering about which is better. Enjoy.

death by not having brakes doesn't seem too much like feeling pain to me.

Astronomical 08-16-09 01:37 AM

death by not having brakes is a most righteous death brouh

Cyclist0383 08-16-09 01:39 AM

If you are totally mechanically inept there are no brakes to adjust. Also, if your wheels are out of true there will be no rubbing on the brakes. That being said I ride with brakes......

I think my experience of life is genuine enough without crap like this.

I rode brakeless for a long time and sometimes still do, but I've come to like my brake. Comes in handy when unexpected things happens in front of you (extra relevant riding here), and when you're hauling heavy things or live in a hilly area, it's also just really, really practical.
