like father ... like son
My elder son has evidently inherited my patella alta / unstable kneecap problem. He dislocated the left one on a hiking trail on Monday afternoon. Fortunately, his brother, who is a doctor of physical therapy and quite the outdoorsman/mountaineer, was available to rescue him, slide his kneecap back into place, and get him down the mountain to his car. (This is the same kid who stopped a runaway vehicle -- gas/brake confusion -- in a shopping center parking lot a couple of years ago and last week pulled a woman from a crashed car that was about the burst into flames, after assessing her for potential spinal injuries.) Between his brother's medical training and my own school of hard knocks training (two full dislocations, one partial), we should be able to get my elder son's kneecap back "on track," so to speak. I have told him that bicycling and target exercises have helped me immensely -- my kneecaps have been stable for 20 years now.
