Cycling COMMUTE METAL earned - 2010
Here's the metal qualification for 2010. Explanations follow the tables.
Qualification via number of rides ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Commute riding days -- Metal 168 (avg 3.5/wk) -- platinum 144 (avg 3.0/wk) -- gold 120 (avg 2.5/wk) -- silver 096 (avg 2.0/wk) -- bronze 072 (avg 1.5/wk) -- copper Qualification via commuting miles ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ miles commuted on bike -- metal 1,700 -- platinum 1,400 -- gold 1,200 -- silver 0,950 -- bronze 0,750 -- copper This is a follow up to the post created at the end of last year. The basic idea is that if we can tell others that we are XXXX metal commuting rider we might motivate ourselves to ride more, encourage others to ride more and enhance the reputation of regular cycle commuters. One of the issues raised last year was the some commutes are long and it's too hard to ride a high number of days. Another issue was that some commutes are too short and so high miles commuting are hard to accumulate. Some suggested this is not the olympics and the expectation should be that any regular commuter could earn a metal. Finally, with vacation, holidays and sick days it's unreasonable to assume there are 50 weeks we could be riding. Adjustments: -- frequency reduced, -- baseline number of weeks is 48 -- two methods of qualifying for metal Finally, unlike other polls, this poll will be public. I do not expect voting on poll until late in year. After you earn one metal, indicate via poll mechanism and add a note in the thread. Have fun and enjoy a new year of commuting |
Gold by # of days, platinum by # of miles, so I clicked both.
|
I'm confused. Is this what we earned last year, or what we expect to earn this year, or something else entirely?
|
This is NOT 2009. This is for 2010, thus no one will have a metal yet. It's a target for this year's riding.
|
Ok, so I'll only vote at the end of the year.
|
ack, I thought this was for 2009.
With the price of gold being what it is, I'm tempted to downgrade to gold for 2010. :D |
No problem chip, multiple voting is allowed in this poll.
|
not that my addiction requires much motivation... but I kinda think there should be something above platinum... like +250 days, +4k mi's
|
Platinum medal seems a bit low to me. Shouldn't the Platinum go to those who ride year round regardless of the weather? That would bring the year rounders in the mid 200's if they ride five days a week.
Why not have it based on days per week avg? Platinum 5+ Gold 4 Silver 3 Bronze 2 Copper 1 |
Bah... I checked it based on my 2009 numbers; but I suspect my 2010 numbers will be about the same.
|
I'm pretty sure I was gold, maybe platinum, based on miles last year (I would actually have to have a bike computer and look at it to know for sure). Something like bronze or silver based on number of days. If I commute anywhere near as often as last year I should be at platinum easily because my one-way distance increased from 7 to 17 miles at the start of the year. boo-yeah.
|
Platinum by days and miles!
Logged about 4000 miles last year and rode to work every day but maybe 2. |
well i will shoot for double platinum this year, why the heck not ?
|
I'm surprised that I qualified for a platinum meDal, ;) although it probably was on ride frequency alone. I have no idea what mileage I rode.
And, yeah, what about above platinum? Unobtanium? Adamantium? Or bike materials -- steel, titanium, high-mod carbon? :D |
Yes, I know I had trouble setting the metal. First draft had plat at 4x/week and 2000 miles, but I got so much blow back in 2009 over higher levels, I dropped them for 2010. For next year, what would be good metals to use for 4.0 and 4.5x a week. There should be something for high high performers. Uranium and Plutonium? Open to suggestions
|
PS. I'd add them this year, but previously, once a poll was created there was no option to edit it.

MEDAL MEDAL MEDAL MEDALS!!! Jeez, dude, just because the MEDALS are made out of METAL does not mean you earn a "METAL".
:p ;) :D Friggin' Hooked On Phonics and automated spell-checking are combining to be the death of the written word... |

You better lighten up, BarracksSi, or they will take you to the Old Pedantics' Home.
:P |
hmm... Platinum+ here. 3500 miles. needs a higher top level in the Commuter forum I would think?
|
Only 1700 miles for platinum? Can we go triple or quadruple platinum?
|
Double Platinum here
|
I took the platinum, with 183 days and 2955 miles, but I'm not claiming I deserve it.
In fact, having been doing this for almost ten years, I don't need a medal (nor indeed a metal, meddle, &c. Save the medals for the people who are new to this. On second thought, how 'bout you add the following: Reynolds Medal, 2500 miles Columbus Medal, 3000 miles, Aluminum Medal, 3500 miles, Carbon Medal, 4000 miles, Titanium Medal, 5000 |
Platinum here as well.
