Giant FastRoad Decision - CoMax 1 Purchased!

Hi, all! I've been reading a ton before this post but still would like your opinions. I have narrowed it down to a 2018 Giant Fastroad SLR 1 or CoMax 1 because I want a fast Hybrid and those bikes are currently on sale with stock still available in Medium Large size . I recently owned a Cannondale Quick Carbon 1 that was too big for me (XL) I got that bike used for $800 CAD so I couldn't pass it up, sold it for $1200. The Giant bikes are as follows SLR 1 is Aluminum / Composite fork Tiagra $1395 and the CoMax 1 is full Composite and 105 $1935. I don't ride a ton and the terrain is Galloping Goose Trail in Victoria BC mostly paved with some gravel sections. The $540 difference is negligible but could allow for a pedal and shoe purchase to make up the difference. For my limited usage I feel the SLR 1 is adequate but will I feel disappointed in years to come, having not sprung for the Carbon 105 bike? |
Have you viewed my thread from a couple of years ago about the CoMax 1's my wife and I have? If not check it out. They are currently still being used as back up and travel bikes after over 30K miles on them. Great bikes btw.

I sure you will enjoy them as much as we do/did. As I stated before they are now our back up/ bad weather/ rv travel bikes as we just purchased a couple of Canyon RoadLite CF 9.0 LLD as our daily rides. You can read that here if interested: https://www.bikeforums.net/hybrid-bi...roadlites.html |
+1 with the Fastroad Comax 1, I have the 2018 model,
I also have a Trek DS 8.5 2016, which was ridden well, and thoroughly enjoyed riding it, but after getting the Fastroad, it has become my go to bike, to me it is so much more fun to ride than the DS, given the conditions I ride on, ( flat smooth dedicated bike paths around Korea.) It's so quick, and the 105, wow !! |
I'm really struggling going with the SLR 1 or the CoMax 1, have until Saturday to decide. There's two SLR 1's and one CoMax 1 still left in my sizes who knows if they'll be sold by the time next week roles around when I can get to them.

I'll be happy if I can get 300 miles on my bike, 30,000? That's insane lol
So guys, being that I don't ride a lot or often I think the aluminum version is a likely choice in this endeavor, I am trying to manufacture a good enough reason to go with the carbon option and that 105 groupset but I tested an Escape 0 Tiagra $1028 tax in and it felt awesome |

I hope you are able to ride both the Escape 0 and the FastRoad CoMax.

I have a 2015 FastRoad CoMax. Great bike. Go for it.

Well everyone, thanks for your help. I decided on the CoMax 1. I got the 2018 model in medium large size and I believe it is the last in that size in BC. Added PD-EH500 pedals on got M162L shoes from Facebook Market place brand new in the box C$70. Will update with pics once my post count allows me upload privileges!

I think you will LOVE this choice. Ready for pics and that all important "First Ride Report"..... get pedaling:)

Here it is with a SQLab 311 handlebar and leather grips installed. This bike is fast, there's some creaks and pops from it breaking in, coming from the wheels I think? Also the rear shifter might need minor adjustment but I'll break it in more before i'm sure about that, past that it feels great, it's definitely the best bike I've ever owned haha! |
Absolutely beautiful! :thumb: Congrats.

That is a great looking bike. I hope you enjoy it as much as my wife and I do ours. I really like the color scheme. It appears to have a few less Giant label plasted all over. If this is your first time running tubeless don't forget to read up on some of threads about them here on BF. A couple things that will help you in the future... learn how to bleed the brakes. Very simple to do with the right tools. There are a couple of videos on the web about it. I can send you on if you need it. Get some Stans, the injector as save the $$ instead of giving it to your LBS. Get one of the plug kits and have with you. Now that the weather is starting to improve the most important thing is to get some miles.... or in your case KM's on it. Enjoy

Awesome, the only thing I'm looking to change on this bike is the saddle.
|
Congratulations on a great choice. You will be glad you went for the CoMax for the mechanicals alone not to mention the entire package. Enjoy and hope you can get some miles on it very soon.

Ah...just not too long ago , I had my eyes set on this baby. This and the Giant Anyroad Comax. I would have gone for the Anyroad , due to my insecurity as a rider. I used to ride BMX when I was young and am used to always having the brakes in one of my hands. The Anyroad had extra brake levers at the bar. It really depends on whether you want wide tires. In the end , Cannondale Bad Boy 1 got my money. They are all similarly priced. I also looked at Canyon urban, but it had to be ordered. If you are thinking of the Fastroad, then you want flat bars and speed. Then it is right for you. I am from Taiwan so ...we give the best bang for your buck. Haha...Giant bikes do!
