Retailers / Where to buy:

Try your local bike shop first to see what they have in stock. If you want to order online, here are a few options:

Don't forget that in addition to the 20x1-1/4" size noted above, Panaracer Paselas are also available in 27x1" and 27x1-1/8"

rumrunn6 07-23-12 01:14 PM

wow nice, but where can we buy them?

mainstreetexile 07-23-12 01:26 PM

Auchen, good note. Where a tire is available in multiple sizes, I have them listed together horizontally, by descending tire size.

rumrunn6: Your local bike shop or the internet. Amazon has most of them, Niagara Cycles, Biketiresdirect (never ordered from them but they showed up when searching for available sizes/weights). The Forte tires are just available at Performance Bike (online or in their stores). If anybody wants to note any particular online stores they've had good experiences with, we can add a list to the end of the post.

I don't know about adding an individual link to buy each tire/size though, since they may change often. Just googling for the brand + model + size should get you a lot of results. If you use the google shopping search it may even compare prices for you.

Continental also currently makes and sells the Ultra Sport, which is very handy
because, while a little lower end, it is a very serviceable tire that is widely
available and made in both 1 1/4" and 1 1/8" widths.

I have some I've been test riding, and they are at least as good as the
Performance forte tires, if a little more in cost.......might actually end up
being better tires.

Continental Ultra Sport Tire - Multiple Sizes

Performance-minded tread pattern with treaded shoulders and circumferential grooves in the center for lateral grip

Fine casing with transparent sidewall offers good handling

Multi-layer casing construction offers high puncture-resistance, increased rolling performance and handling, minimum weight and increased comfort

Weight for 27 x 1-1/4 size is 380 grams; weight for 700 x 28 size is 350 grams

Imported

I just bought a set of the 27 x 1 Pasela's from BikeTiresDirect to replace some very old tires that were on my around-towner bike. They were on sale for $16 or so. My LBS sells them for the reg price of $24.99...

Panaracer Pasela's

Good note, I've added that one in too.

I THINK I remember the Vittoria Rubinos coming in a 27' size and, if I recall, Forte had more options. Will check more later.

Edit - Rubinos are 700c and Forte/Specialized only offers the strada models. I KNOW they had a 27 x 1 1/8 model a few years ago...and more options.

noglider 07-23-12 01:42 PM

I really like the way the Pasela rides in the 28mm (1-1/8") and 32mm (1-1/4") widths. I've tried 35mm and didn't like it. I haven't tried 25mm.

Do companies still make a 27" rim anymore?

Yes. Velocity and SunRingle for two.

photogravity 07-23-12 02:25 PM

I'm looking for whitewalls in 27x1-1/8" to go on one of my bikes. Does anyone know of any sources for that? The ones currently on the bicycle are Vittoria but it doesn't appear they are making them any longer.

02Pilot 07-23-12 02:29 PM

Couple things:

-The Nashbar Prima 2 seems to be a rebranded CST C740.

-Vittoria makes the Zaffiro in 27x1 1/8 and 27x1 1/4; Niagara has them.

-There are a couple of cyclocross tires available: the Tioga Bloodhound and Club Roost Cross Terra are both available in 27x1 3/8. Again, Niagara stocks these.

mainstreetexile 07-23-12 03:10 PM

Lots of good notes. I've updated the most with more tires and split them up into "Good tires", "Cheaper Tires", and "Wider Tires".

That Schwalbe HS159 looks like a nice tire, hadn't heard of that one before. Photogravity, that one is said to have an "off white sidewall."

It looks like we've hit the max number of photos for a post so I've had to remove some of the tire images:

You have included a total of 11 images in your message. The maximum number that you may include is 10. Please correct the problem and then continue again.

My Panaracer Pasela's 27" x 1" came today. Look like a decent tire. Mounting them was pretty straight-forward w/o complication. What I did notice was that they looked slightly lagrer compared to what I had on there previously (27 x 1 Specialized Touring II's). So I went about measuring them.

The Pasela's were just over 24mm wide, while the old Touring II's (also 27x1) measured out at 21mm. The Panaracer 27x1 looked more like a 23C in width. I'd think the 2 other sized Pasela's (1/8" & 1/4") available, might be OK for some, but way wider/bigger than I would want...ymmv?

I should have pointed out that the version of the HS159 pictured above is the gumwall. I haven't seen the whitewall version in person, but it looks pretty white in the photos.

Thanks MainStreetExile! This thread will be a most useful resource! There is a Sunlite Whitewall (rebranded CST) at Niagara Cycle that I buy by the truckload because they look sharp and are inexpensive, about $8.50 each.

Jenson, among others, sells a Michelin World Tour in 27 x 1 1/4. I've no experience with them.

BluesDaddy 07-23-12 10:52 PM

I've got some light use in on a pair of World Tours and I like them so far. I got mine just before they added a reflective stripe on the sidewall, which to me makes them completely undesireable on a classic bike.

rootboy 07-24-12 04:30 AM

Yeah. Good idea for a thread, MSE. I have a barely used set of Serfas tires downstairs that are 27 X 1 1/4. Blackwall. Can't remember the model. I gotta remember to stick those on the FS forum.

55 Traveler 07-24-12 05:45 AM

I've sworn off the cheap Kenda's as the last few that I've bought have been out of round. My last project got Panaracers which are very fine, but I would like to find something with a racier (slick) tread.

55 Traveler 07-24-12 05:48 AM

I've also had good service fron Continental Ultra Sports but would like something similar in a tan wall ( not bright orange).
