Road Cycling around Madison Wisconsin
 

If my husband and I want to spend several days cycling not only the trails but also the country roads in and outside of Madison, what part of Madison should we stay in? We want to be able to ride from where we are staying. Thanks

I have been to Madison and it is not big. Cycling through the town is great. I do not think it matters where you stay. It will be easy to get to where you select to go. Great city.

If you're up to slightly off road, Madison has close access to the Badger State Trail, Military Ridge State Trail, Sugar River State Trail, and The Glacial Drumlin State Trail. The Capitol City Trail in Madison goes all over/around the city.

You might go to Ride With GPS and do a search for road rides within 10 miles of Madison, you should see quite a few.

Wisconsin DNR has had a notice up on their site advising against use of Badger State and Sugar River trails. Maybe someone with local knowledge can comment. I'd like to know also. Was planning to ride Badger State trail later this summer.

Badger Trail Alert: Due to recent severe weather in southern Wisconsin, users are strongly encouraged to stay off the Badger and Sugar River State Trails due to surface conditions. We anticipate having to close areas of the trail once staff more closely assess conditions, and use of the trail may prolong repairs. (updated 5/24/19).

Head west of town! The best riding, by far, is west of town. Search www.ridewithgps.com for rides starting in or near Cross Plains, Blue Mounds, Mount Horeb, etc.

And make sure you take your climbing legs with you. There are some great roads in that area, but be prepared to climb some hills. It's a lot of fun.
