I was working in a bike shop in '80-"81 and we sold one for somewhere around $650 if I recall correctly. Seems to me prices were gradually rising in those days, so in "79 it might have been $625.

Inflation was nuts back in the late 70's and early 80's. Well over 10%/year, IIRC.

Try 13-15% inflation. A Pro MK V was nearly 1,000 by mid 1978.

You got that right. Double digit home mortgage interest rates. Very fast runup in housing prices. 16% interest on a 4-year bank CD. (!)

I do know the Raleigh Super Course was selling for $125 in March 1971, when I paid $150 for the American Eagle Semi-Pro (Nishiki Competition). The next year the going rate for a Peugeot PX-10 was about $260.
