Mike Garcia wheels arrived today
 

After more than a month, my wheels finally arrived. He had been out of the 28H Speedcific hubs and were waiting for his supplier to deliver the new model. Here's are the specifics:

IRD Cadence Rims (VSR for the rear) (silver)
Speedcific Serenity Hubs (black - they don't have silver yet)
Front - 28 spoke, XL14 (silver)
Rear - 28, XL14 Left 1x, DB14 Drive 3x (silver)
DT Swiss Black alloy nipples

One thing Mike didn't do was give a weight measurement. I don't have a gram counter so the only thing I know is that the rims were 390g.

These will compliment the wheels that came with my bike, ALX220's. The all silver with black nipples on the news wheel set is an exact opposite of the AXL's, so it looks like a totally different bike. I haven't had any problems with the ALX as many other forum members have, but I wanted to get something lighter with less rolling resistance for when I'm not commuting. The Gator Skins I have on the AXL's can take a beating on the crappy roads into Seattle, but are noticeably slower than the Vittoria slicks that came with the bike.

I put some Continental Attack/Force tires on and after getting them on the bike I shifted through all the gears with no derailleur adjustments. That will come in handy when I transform the bike into commuter mode. With a little jaunt around the neighborhood the first thing I thought was "Ohh, so that's what they mean by 'stiff'..." So I guess the ALX wheels are a little flexy. One thing that might take a bit getting used to is the click-click-click of the Speedcific freewheel when not pedaling is considerably louder than the ALX hub. I'm sure I'll find a bunch of other little perks as I put more miles on them. Hurray for new stuff!

That wheelset weighs about 1460g with the spoke count you got. And yes, they are a very good wheel. You'll like climbing the hills around Seattle with those.

Great-looking wheelset!

I don't see those listed anywhere on his website. Do you have any specs on them... weight, cost? They look a lot like the Velocity Superlights...

Also, is that a Shimano 10sp only cassette body?

I ordered my MG wheels a week ago monday. They should be arriving soon..

in the meantime, yeah the serenity hubs are 10speed shimano only. This means no spacer between the big cog and the freewheel. that's like 2 grams! now i can go eat that cheeseburger.

Nice. I had the same bike as you but with a double and a set of MG wheels. I opted for the Velocity Aerohead rims in powdercoat blue. They looked hot with the Blue painted Felt F65 and the blue Specialized Mondo Pro tires I had on it. :D

Those Alex wheels do suck though. Now you know what you were missing. ;)

They are brand new hubs and I dont think he has anything about them yet. That was part of the long wait...they got stuck in customs and he had to fill out all this paper work about how much the bearings cost and what not. For weight, I don't know the exact but from what he said, they are a few grams lighter than the Perception model. And yeah they are only available in Shimano 10sp.

I actually looked at your bike quite a bit in deciding what wheels/color to get. In the end I figured just to get the silver in case I got another bike that wasn't blue. Plus, I didn't want to be a total copycat. I figured the blue tires would make up for it.

- hmmm... Mr. Garcia's shop is close by... perhaps i'll have to stop and chat about a new wheelset, 'cause those pics look great!

Maybe these are similar to the hubs on the Shimano R600?

I got a set of the Niobium Aero wheels about two months ago. The only problem I had with them was a creaking noise in the front wheel when tourquing the bars as in a sprint or in climbing. It turns out that putting a little 3 in 1 oil on the fork drop outs solves the problem. It was kind of wierd though. Otherwise they ride great and at 1500 grammes for an aero wheel for a nice low price cannot be beat. That front hub looks different then mine as it has that fluted profile while mine is just a barrel.

I talked to MG today since there were no weight stickers attached to the spokes, which is what he normally does. He did his calculations and also remembered my wheelset and recalled that they weighed 1397 grams. Not bad for $372.

I dunno your level of expertise, but you might want to recheck your limit screw settings, especially your L one. Not a good thing to throw the chain into a new set of wheels. I did that once on a new set of MTB wheels, fortunately, it didn't hurt anything as i was going slow. For some reason, it never threw the chain into the spokes in the stand but it did on the road.

So just don't stop pedaling!! :D

That's actually one of the sounds I've grown to love about my Mavics, that sturdy click click click.
