Your Weekend/Week Ride Reports -- Feb 8/9/10/11

Happy February long weekend ... it's Royal Hobart Regatta Weekend here.

But even if it isn't a nice summer long weekend where you are, tell us all about your cycling during the weekend or the week.

I went for my third MRI in about 2 months on Wednesday ... this time on my hip area.

Fortunately, the PT's assumption wasn't quite right.
Unfortunately, the PT's assumption wasn't quite right.

Around the end of Nov, I started feeling a bit of an ache in my right leg when running. Figured it was muscle. Rested a bit, did some stretching, and it felt a little bit better.

Ran a half-marathon, and could barely hobble by the end. Still figured it was muscle (the sartorius, to be specific, because of the groin and inner thigh pain), tried more rest and stretching, but lots of difficulty walking, and definitely no running. It even hurt to cycle.

Went to a PT who ran me through a whole bunch of tests and was pretty sure I'd fractured my hip ... stress fracture. No walking, no cycling, no running, no stretching ... nothing for a week until my MRI. If it were a stress fracture, I would have had to rest for the next 4-6 weeks.

But it's not a stress fracture! Instead, I've torn the cartilage in my hip and have really messed up the ligaments.

So it's not complete rest, but it is short and slow walking and cycling.

Friday -- 3 km walk to get dinner

Saturday -- Cycling!!

Distance: 20.75km
Elevation: 109m

Elapsed Time: 2:17:21
Speed: Avg: 11.2km/h | Max: 25.6km/h

The cycling was surprisingly tiring for me for some reason. It was a great ride, enjoyed it, but my fitness level has deteriorated.

No riding here, getting our once in a decade blizzard with a few inches of snow that unfortunately will be around awhile.usually it snows, disrupts life for a day and it’s gone but no such luck this time.

Had a real nice day for riding. Mild temps, over cast most of the day and a slight breeze. I didn't over do things just enjoyed the ride.
I used the Zeopoxa app but the time doesn't stop when I stop riding. I did a lot of stopping, does that effect average speed? Hopefully it's accurate because it's free to use :)

Just some easy indoor spins and workouts for now, no outdoor rides for awhile. Endocrinologist said I need to take it easier for awhile until the thyroid meds get my levels up to normal. My energy level has been erratic, so the blood tests didn't surprise me. And no crashing allowed until after a bone density scan.

Naturally I ignored that advice and went for a couple more rides last week, four out of five days when I'm supposed to be limiting myself to only three a week with rest days in between. Suddenly exhausted and had to drop out of a casual group ride. Felt like they were hammering but it was only a 15 mph pace over a flat stretch and 12 mph up an undulating 2-4% grade. A little faster than usual but not normally beyond my comfort zone. Legs were dead.

That's when I realized I was cooked, done, falling off the bone. I was looking for an excuse to drop out anyway. It was a regular night group ride, but none of the regulars were there and the new folks made me nervous. Too much half-wheeling/overlapping wheels, nobody calling out road hazards, ride leader making sudden stops when it was better to go, or going when we should stop. The last straw was someone's phone popping off the handlebar, causing two people to crash. One of those heavy, near-tablet sized phones on a Quad lock. Dumb. I was ready to bug out anyway. My dead legs just gave me the excuse I needed. Fortunately by then I'd lost trust in the group and was a few bike lengths back, not even trying to draft.

Group went east, I went west toward the 7-11 for coffee and chocolate donuts, a rare indulgence -- I love me some chocolate donuts but indulge only during bike rides.

The donuts were good. And the 7-11 owner also owns an Ethiopian restaurant. I love that stuff and use berebere seasoning at home. So I'll go back for lunch or dinner. Serendipitous ride after all.

2/10/19 Delaware coastal ride

An absolutely beautiful day for a ride here in south coastal Delaware. Total of 38 miles from home to east to Bethany Beach, north to Indian River Inlet, south back to Bethany and then to Fenwick Island, west to Bayside, and then northeast back to home. Mid 30's with a light to moderate east/southeast wind. Stopped to get some pictures along the way.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6774d0fb33.jpg

Temperature in the mid forties in Gloucester Va today. I took a 30 mile spin. About an hour an 45 minutes. Went by a field with about forty to fifty turkeys. I should stopped and took a picture.

About 8" of snow down here near the water, so went for a 3 hour snowshoe with friends up in the mountains, temps 10°-15°. We had a wonderful time and got good and tired. Lots better than sitting around grousing about it.

Did the Tour de Palm Springs century on Saturday. It was really cold in the morning (for us SoCal folks) but warmed up and was beautiful towards the end of the ride.

I got to do a post work evening ride on Davis Is. this Thursday for 26 miles. First time I had been out on a week night in a while. I really need to start doing that more. Saturday went to Upper Tampa Bay trail for 40 miles and Sunday did the S. Tampa Picnic to Davis Is for 40 miles. Windy both days and my legs were beat. Also of note I saw a gorilla riding a jet ski on the Hillsborough river on the way home. Don't see that every day. :)
