Me and my 4-year old twins at the Davis 4th of July Criterium. It's becoming a family tradition: I race, the kids march in the parade, we take part in the kids' ride, then grab some lunch and head home for a nap before a big barbecue and fireworks. Great times.

My motivation for getting back into riding was/has been getting my two oldest to ride. My 7 year old is now on a 20" wheel bike and bugging me to let him ride the small-frame Trek Mountain bike that I picked up earlier this summer and my 5 year old is a peddling machine. That only leaves my 3 year old to teach, but it will not take him long. He is out of the garage door and asking me to ride around the block as soon as I open the garage door... Sailors family joined the "train" theme with the morning commuter train.
It's really my own fault. I've noticed a good deal on a pair of Trail-a-Bikes on Craigslist two weeks ago, Little Sailor's 4th birthday is coming this Saturday, so he got an early birthday gift. Now of course he wants to pedal and absolutely refuses to ride in the trailer. During last two weeks we put over little over 60 miles on the trailer bike.

we're not quite at the family cycling stage (daughter is just 4mos and NE winter is soon approaching), but i found my chariot trailer for a steal of a deal (60% off), and took the hefty plunge. it hauls all of our laundry to the laundromat (3 double loads and family-size detergent, etc.), and in jogger mode—while it's a bit of an obnoxious SUV on our local trails—there's no question that our daughter is in some baby wheeled-blissed-out-zen environment (i simply pull over to the side when other hikers are coming).

there was some question as to how the trailer would work with my commuter, since i have disc brakes. the QR and arm fit fine (it's a bit tight under my rear-rack, but it does fit), but the safety strap is too close to the disc rotor, and rubbed on several occasions when i was testing it; i simply attached the safety strap to the rear-rack, which is not ideal and surely not condoned by the legal-types at Chariot, but accomplishes all of the same tasks (the rack is stronger than the weak piece of nylon cord they use for a safety strap). and of course, under load, the disc brakes work flawlessly for stopping—no rim brake uncertainty!

i also found that my rear sks fender is just slightly short of being long enough to prevent kick-back. i found very minor particle matter coming off of the rear wheel—nothing of any concern, a few pieces of dried leaf that floated in past the screen—but i'd feel better if it were nothing at all, so i think i'll install a mud-flap on the end of the fender. i can't imagine riding without fenders, unless the front plastic guard was down.

finally, for those in apartment life, the Chariot folds down significantly, which is to say that it goes from the size of a Smart car to a folded-up Smart car (hyperbole), and which is also to say it still takes up *a lot* of storage space. it'd be easier if we had a proper garage; but we don't. Even so, i fit it into our largish storage closet (along with the bikes), just barely.

All things considered, i'm very excited about the prospects for this coming spring!

It is fun to see that there are other families riding with "trains." This is our train at the moment, but I am thinking of changing the trailer for another Piccolo; has anyone on this forum had two Piccolos on the same train?

Hi Ann - we met you on the Tour du Port ride at the pizza lunch. I was with my husband and son (age 7) who ride a white TREK tandem with the stoker kit. Nice pics. If you look at the northeast forum someone (Barry) posted some pics of you all in the Tour Du Port thread.

Yes, I remember meeting your family ~ we had fun on our ride with Tour du Port.

Finally convinced my 7 yr old to ride his own bike down the hill out of the neighborhood (he would only do it on the trail-a-bike before) to go downtown to the farmers' market and some other errands:

This frees me up to pull our daughter in the trailer and my wife to not have to carry anything at all back up the hill to the house, so that's a win all around. And the more we keep him on his own bike, the easier it will be to transition the t-a-b entirely over to my daughter. The 2 kids are pretty different size/shape so right now it's just too much work to switch bars/seat around between them, and the t-a-b is just his. Soon it will just be hers.

My son said he likes this better than the trail-a-bike:
