Steel tubed wheels for 1980 Raleigh Racer
Hi
just enquiring - can anyone recommend wheels that will fit tubes and tyres for a 1980 Raleigh Competition- I presently have tubular rims and tyres but the shop screwed up the fitting - was thinking of using the tubulars for vintage rallies etc and have something else for my commuting - would like similar looking wheels and tyres - just ones with inner tubes . Thanks for your help |
I do not think anyone sells steel-rimmed wheels anymore and besides you really want aluminum rims because braking really sucks with steel rims, especially when wet.

Aluminium suits me - I just don’t know where to start with regards changing the wheels. Any recommendations of types / brands would be appreciated

I guess what I’m looking for is something that will suit a 1980’s racer maintaining the vintage look but without tubular wheels

" Racer"?
You can get steel rim replacement wheels at bike shops, they order them from their wholesalers.
But a better wheel, other than needing exact replica parts, would be an aluminum rim 1 an extruded aluminum rim would have hook edges so inflated tire blow off less likely.. ... |
Thanks for the advice !

A 1980 Raleigh Competition G.S.?? and to be clear, you are wanting clincher rims?
700C / 622 BSD rims is what came on my 1978 Raleigh Competition G.S. Unless you have some I've got 622BSD Mavic Open Pro rims laced to Shimano ultegra 6800 that I'm about to put on my 1978 Raleigh Competition G.S. So don't pigeon hole yourself into old wheels when there are plenty of new and good wheels you can put on it. |
You need to check your rear spacing and freewheel or cassette (likely freewheel)
|
Anything that isn't deep should fit the bill. I'd get silver open pros and call it a day.
They'll likely lace up with a different spoke length than the 40 year old ones on the bike, so be prepared for that. If the hubs are in good shape, that would be your best bet. Before you do anything, double check that they're not 27s. |
Try RETROGRESSION in San Diego, CA.
