I don't see any love for Phil Wood (?)
 

After being on this forum for several years I started to notice that I really don't see many threads regarding Phil Wood hubs and BBs. Why is that? I remember 35 years ago all my cycling buddies who had his stuff on their bikes would rave about how nice it all was (and it still is). Now, I hardly see even a thread regarding his stuff.

Is it because it is mostly tour and track targeted? Is it just too heavy for today's tastes? Personally, I still dream about building up a set of wheels with his hubs.

It's C&V now, and there is still love in that forum.

Few are willing to pay $150 for a bottom bracket, nor do many want one made of stainless steel.

I think some of us have forgotten their Phil Wood button bracket is still in their bike spinning smoothly for the past 20+ years.

I totally get that. They do have Titanium.

Has anyone tried their Outboard BBs? I wonder how they stand up and feel compares to their spindle BBs?

A White industries ENO eccentric hub works well, but can make rear brake setup a PITA.

I've got about 15,000 miles on the Phil BB on my main bike and yep, it's great. Smooth as silk.

I have a squeeze bottle of Phil Wood Tenacious Oil for chains that I bought in 1979. In 2000 or so I switched over the more modern chain lube on my main road bike but still use that stuff on the other family bikes and on an old bike I now really only use on an indoor trainer.

That green bottle will not go empty! It must be regenerating oil in there because 40 years seems like a long time for the original few ounces to last!

They have quietly carried on for years which makes me happy about American made products.

Their current hubs are even prettier than what they used to produce.

It it is a bit odd that you don’t hear of people building up custom wheelsets with their cassette hubs. The rear cassette hub is very expensive, yes. But compare it with Chris King and Industry 9 and you realize that they compete.

Maybe somebody could post post some comparisons of weight, specifications, etc... I believe their cassette rear hub is available in a lightweight, aluminum freehub body edition or a heavy duty steel freehub body edition. Their polished silver finishes are fantastic but you can order anodized colors too.

Their seatpost collars, headset, and quick release skewers are all really well overbuilt and would represent a good value for their substantial price if you had a need for it.
