200$ used bikes ?
 

Hi guys . I am looking a road bike. I am not an expert also. Do you have any idea for me under 200$ road bikes ? Also I will work as a uber rider. So I can ride in winter also. What is my best option . Do I have to raise to my budget ? Thanks

It depends on where you live, and what your local used bike market is like. And, how vintage do you want? Are you looking for something 10 years old or less, or are you OK with an old school 10 speed from the 70s or 80s? And what sort of bike repair skills do you have, so that if you get something a little rough, do you have the skills to do your own repairs, or will you be paying a bike shop for all your repair work?

I m in Toronto. I am 25 years old and 5.5 feet. Actually I interested with road bikes. I can handle to repair. Also I have no idea 10 speed and 70s 80s..

I just picked up a 1980s Nishiki Cresta for $150 on Craigslist. Rode it 20 miles today. It was hardly used.

I think it would be a great experience to start with some of the older steel frames from the 70s or 80s. Just make sure you don't have to put money into it from the get-go and you can keep the price down. Definitely get the experience of riding steel, though, so you'll be able to compare rides to aluminum and carbon. Who knows, you might find you like the bikes and live the adage - Steel is Real!

I am looking at around the same budget, sub-200.

I'm interested in purchasing an inexpensive road bike for commuting. I will be in Chicago. It's my first bike in awhile. I'd like an older bike because 1) I like steel frames (period); 2) I like to reuse rather than buy new; 3) it's good for my budget. Budget: If there was a nice tuned up bike with new-ish parts on it for $50-200 that would be ideal.

Just a tip here: When looking at a potential purchased you might want to flip the bike upside down and check the bottom bracket area for rust. I was surprised to find that the bike had a little rust there despite being barely used.

Riding a bike on the road isn't the same as a road bike. Road bikes, of course, can tear up mountain roads. :)

You might sit back and define your needs for comfort, distance, and speed. They may not all be compatible. But, if you're hitting > 60 miles a day on a regular basis, then you may start emphasizing speed and efficiency.

Thus looking at a road bike.

$200 is a pretty tight budget for anything less than 20 years old, but there are plenty of good bikes in the 20 to 40 year old range (thus made in the 1970's, 1980's, or 1990's), and they would make good all around utility road bikes.

This is what most people think of when you ask about road bikes (or 10-speeds, ok, it says 12 speed. :eek:)

I didn't do an exhaustive search, but this would make a good road bike for your needs. Albeit, on the top end of your budget.

Perhaps get a road bike for those spring/summer/fall days, and hunt for a beater MTB for the mid-winter riding.

I'm having troubles seeing the details on this bike, but it may also fit the bill. A little more modern than the bike above, and perhaps more robust with a wider selection of tires.

Nonetheless, you're getting closer. That bike is somewhere between what one might call a Hybrid and a Flat Bar Road Bike, but should make a good city bike.

If you are looking at a used bike, then post the ad for the bike you are looking at.

You probably want either the 51cm or the 54cm size, probably leaning towards the 51cm.

Regarding the other link you posted, looks like someone took a touring frame Z(notice the geometry and brazeons), triple drive train and canti brakes and slapped a crabon fork on it.

Hit that local CL and hope for the best. If you want a new road bike, you'll need about 650 to get a decent bike

Specialized put CF forks on their Tricross which would be my guess. Not sure of the year. Probably around 2010 or so.

That fork looks like it fits well with that frame. Lots of tire clearance, and matching front and rear cantis.

If the Felt Verza is actually a modern 10-speed with disc brakes for $300 Canadian, that would likely be a very good deal.

Keep in mind, vintage 10-speed bikes and modern 10-speed bikes count the gears differently.

In the past, they multiplied the front and rear sprockets together, so 5 rear x 2 front = 10 speeds. 6 rear x 3 front = 18 speeds.

On modern bikes, they simply count the rear sprockets (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, or perhaps 14). Then simply report whether the front is 1x, double, or triple.

Which bike? The Nishiki above, the Felt Verza, or the possible Tricross? Or something else?

And the problem with the lock is that it isn't as good as you want, or the bike is still locked?

It never hurts to call your local Police Department with the serial number if the deal is too good to be true. Assuming the bike is legit, the locks are typically easy enough to cut off with an angle grinder.

I saw that yesterday, but ignored it for a couple of reasons. It was quite a bit above your specified price range, although some sellers do negotiate.

Under further inspection, the specs don't match the bike.

For example, it is listed as a Verza 10 with 11 speed????

I've tried counting the rear sprockets, and the best I can come up with is probably 9 speed???? The chain also does not appear to be 11 speed, but probably is also 9 speed as expected.

Hmmm... So the Felt Verza 30 is a 9 speed variant with Sora parts. That is a better match.

One of the biggest issues with that bike for you is that you list "5.5 feet". Is that 5'5" or 5'6"? Nonetheless, you are probably looking at a 50cm to a 54cm frame.

That white Verza lists a 61cm frame.
With the sloping TT, you could probably get your leg over it, but it is a big bike.

However, watching the Wacky Thread, it becomes obvious that a lot of people simply find a bike that is similar and cut and paste specs, and really have no idea what they are selling.

That means an astute buyer must be able to judge for themselves. And, can use it for bargaining.

It doesn't necessarily indicate fraud, rather a non-bike savvy seller. Although, they could also be lazy, or intentionally trying to up-value their bike, although a buyer will pretty quickly notice things like mechanical brakes and 9 speed. :P

It still is an interesting bike. Probably worth less than the $650 asking price as it is The Verza 30 is listed at about $800 USD new. $380 CAD is probably a decent deal.

You still have the issue that the bike is probably too big for you
