Bike's I've had - Picture Heavy

Sitting here on another winter morning surrounded by bikes in various states of repair. Have been working on downsizing and reconfiguring the stable so thought I'd start a thread on the bikes that have passed through my hands.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d1e0be5995.jpg
Sold to friend at work and still get to see this a lot
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...3c9aca3c07.jpg
Too flexy, never really connected
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d5d3e20ac9.jpg
Traded for Eurus wheels, a bit small but lovely bike. Always assumed I'd get another custom made.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2edf2e3762.jpg
Both Ironmen, great bikes but didn't connect with me enough to keep them
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c7fe4f52c4.jpg
Great ride just a tad to large. Sold to one of the mechanics at my LBS and he loves it. He rode it on this year's Salt to Saint ride
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b2a73cd732.jpg
Harsh fork on rough roads, a rocket on smooth pavement. I want another.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...bd2d3394dc.jpg
Incredibly good bike. All my silly Strad KOMs came on this bike. I just sprinted well on it for some reason. Sold finally to the LBS mechanic who built it for me.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4d2625ce24.jpg
Mint Circuit. Son didn't like road biking so I passed it on.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...742b3ef155.jpg
Messy local find that was a mint gem underneath. Fixed up and passed it on to a local guy.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...bf73ffdfec.jpg
Was planning to sort this out as a road bike. Wound up steeling the groupset for the Evans bike and sold the frame.

jamesdak 02-20-21 07:35 AM

And it continues:

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...549a9dcec0.jpg
Just sold this on a whim without ever riding it.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...77162a3fed.jpg
My first 650b build. Enjoyed it for a couple of years and then sold it locally. Guy is still enjoying it and sent me a text about it just recently.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...600d659353.jpg
Put way too much into this one then admitted it was too small. Sold for next to nothing.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b4fbfc5d2d.jpg
Another local find I fixed up and then sold. Really good ride, this thing carried speed well and the alloy fork rode great over the chipseal.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c9c26aed04.jpg
Refurbished for a friend but a nice ride if being honest.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...edcf448d16.jpg
This went through all sorts of changes over the years. Crudely built frame that was as fast as anything I've had. Lot's of tire clearance and saw a stint as a gravel bike. Even ran a 11 speed cassette on it for awhile and it shifted great. Sold locally.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...fa08dcd4db.jpg
Serial #1 for 1987. Beautiful bike but it just felt soft in the rear. Liked the Circuit and PDG Paramount better so after a few years I sold this one locally.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...98fcece9f5.jpg
Yep, we all have to have one. Loved this ol' girl but finally realized I didn't ride it all that much and sold it locally. This was really a comfortable ride and quite capable.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a4ca126557.jpg
Just sold locally recently. Just too many bikes and I'm in the process of moving several of the bikes I didn't think I'd sell. Locally buyer who also bought the Giordana Scorpius frame from me.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a8bec66453.jpg
Loved and enjoyed this for a few years then sold it locally.

Raleigh R600. Ultegra 3x10 drivetrain, generic Suntour downtube shifters. Weinmann XP24 rims with triple(!) butted spokes. 20 pounds on the nose. Sold for $300 to a guy at work who doesn't ride it. I've unsuccessfully tried to buy it back.

https://live.staticflickr.com/7807/4...88aa3714_o.jpg
1979 Worksman Newsboy. Powder coated. New wheels with a Nexus 7 coaster rear hub & front drum brake. Donated to co-op for their annual fund-raiser auction. Cool, but heavy. Great drinkin' bike.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a22fc426_o.jpgA 1979 Centurion Omega. 24 pounds of Gaspipe tubing. 700c conversion Mavic Opensport wheels. 3x10 with downtube shifters. 165mm crankset & 40mm wide handlebars. Powder coated in Prismatic French Lavender Just too small for me. Size 56, rode like a 54. Wife wouldn't touch it on account of the downtube shifters. Sold to a shorter gentleman at a swap-meet for $200

Lots of beautiful bikes but I don't know if I could have let this one go, :). I was very happy to find a late 70s UO 10 recently at $40 in great shape I plan on fixing up. I'm impressed that the front derailleur actually worked. Those delrin ones tend to disintegrate over time.

jamesdak 02-20-21 07:49 AM

Still more.....I'm an addict.....

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...bb8fb8eb56.jpg
Rare new buy for me. It just flexed to much over our rough roads at speed. Sold it locally.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...fbbf3394c5.jpg
Had to admit after the Ciocc that a 57cm frame was too big for me. Sold this to a local.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9fc8e3d0cd.jpg
Odd CF for me. Great ride but harsh on chipseal. Sold locally as I committed to steel.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a44b052b22.jpg
Such a beauty but a 54 and a little small. I loved how this looked and was so happy to get it sorted out and sold locally. I love seeing the smiles from the buyer when they get one of my rides.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0221e96d54.jpg
Too many projects, never built this. Sold as frame locally.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ea4f80573c.jpg
Enjoyed this for years and then passed on to a young lady locally. Another really good ride but I had a better fitting Lemond still.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...93fbfca6e9.jpg
Never thought I'd sell this but did a few months ago as I realized I needed to downsize. Another very happy local rider got a deal.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7d8d38d982.jpg
Beautiful bike but did not like how it felt on the road at speed. Sold locally to someone who said he was an enthusiast for a lot less than I had in it. Showed up for sale locally with all the good stuff striped, sad. I sell everything for less than I put it in but it did bug me to be fooled by a flipper and to give him an even better deal.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1ba828a9d7.jpg
Found this locally, fixed it up and rode it, and then moved it on. Still have the newer mint Y-77 that I love. I have to admit these Y-Foils are special on the road.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...890db7eb2b.jpg
My winter bike for years until my son borrowed it and then left it when he moved out of a rental.

jamesdak 02-20-21 07:59 AM

Final few:

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c8c9f787e6.jpg
I had two of these, one too small and one too big. Want another just for the paint scheme
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...588e81ca00.jpg
Technically on load but it's been "loaned" for several years now. No big deal as I know it's being enjoyed.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c81aca9084.jpg

This too was moved on once my back recovered and I committed to steel

jamesdak 02-20-21 08:15 AM

These are on the chopping block locally right now as I try to free up space. Once a couple of more go (probably) in the spring. I'll take the other ads down.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b80d030eba.jpg
Still sorting this out and am still curious about it but I'm planning to not keep it.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b781557be2.jpg
Totally love this and have put a lot into it. Still I'm offering up a mix of bikes to see what goes to free up space.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...617abe0c4e.jpg
Haven't been able to ride this since the AC Joint separation. May strip for parts and hang the frame on the wall of the bike cave.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5e941f3365.jpg
Great bike that get's lost in the shuffle.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f42c7d7d57.jpg
Catch and release I got this summer. Just too many bikes and this is just rider quality.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2f7ed73718.jpg
My baby but time to let someone else enjoy it.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...cd874d874e.jpg
Hope this doesn't go but it is my smallest frame.

They are really good rides once you sort them out. I had quite a few relaxed Sunday rides on mine and do sometimes regret letting it go.

Great ride, but sold the frame to someone who wanted it more that I did...
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ca02356161.jpg
80's Superissimo. Miss this one. Had it for years. Prolly should've held onto it? Sold as frame only...
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7e4169944b.jpg
70's Mondia Prestige.Too small for me @ 55 cm. Rode fine though...
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...3a0197500b.jpg
'86 Mercyx Century (Team Hitachi). Luved the paint scheme, but too squirrelly for me. Could not stand it on fast desents...
Had a nice blue Guerciotti too, but the BB fell apart & ended up selling it.

Rage 02-20-21 08:30 AM

Great pics of some really nice bikes.

no67el 02-20-21 08:38 AM

Amazing collection history---- thanks for taking the time to post these. Beautiful. All your bikes have a nice glow about them--- probably a combination of some frame waxing and a decent camera?

You have a clear fondness for some very "racy" bikes from the late 80's and 90's--- and the wild paint jobs and colors from those times. I miss those days as we are buried under a mountain of matte black carbon frames and derailleurs that look like Darth Vader's paperweights. I have a black carbon gravel bike, and I like riding it, but man is it ugly...

Now you need to show us the "keepers"!

Just out of curiosity, what is the bright green Columbus-tubed bike you are listing for sale?

N

PS: I built up a Fuji S-12s into a 650b gravel bike last summer, inspired by your bike above. Did it mostly to see what the fuss was about-- now the bike is "lent out" to a college kid who rows for my team, so who knows when I'll see it again.

Wildwood 02-20-21 08:53 AM

.........and i thought utah people were mostly skiers.
@jamesdak - quite an assemblage. Nice photos, too.
If you were taller .... we could be better friends! :roflmao2:

On crappy weather days when the daily tasks are done, i sometimes enjoy just sitting around with all the color, grease, rubber, steel - contemplating mods/upgrades. :twitchy:

First time i have heard a Merckx Century described as squirrelly. Given the frame size relative to others pictured, seems it might just be too small.

It's been awhile since I had the bike...I forget. Now that I recall, this pic is not the frame I had, only a pic I copped from the net of the Team Hitachi colors! Mine was a 58 or 59 cm frame...Sorry!
Dunno? It just didn't handle that great...

.

That's an Eddy Martens built bike of Martelly fame. He confirmed he made it back in 1985. Found it locally a few years back as a weird Ribble decaled mystery bike and have been hacking away at it every since.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a1fe3356ca.jpg
How I got it.

The current Bike Cave this morning. Still have the David Kirk "Fishlips" bike to build as well as the Olmo and the Stella is in the living room being worked on.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ffce2b8cc8.jpg

no67el 02-20-21 12:41 PM

The green Martens is quite cool.... as is that Fuji Opus III!

Glad to see you still have a few bikes to ride.... you were worrying me...

;-)

Very nicely balanced 👌. Are those mudguards Zeppelins?

I don't remember for sure but I did get them from Velo Orange.

Best Bike Porn that I have seen in a while just don't let my wife know that I was just "looking!"

eeuuugh 02-21-21 06:42 PM

Did that S12-S have 27" wheel originally? What brakes did you use for the conversion? I tried to convert an early 80s Fuji Del Rey to 650b last year and was defeated by brake reach issues.

Yep, 27" wheels. I used Dia Compe 750 brakes.

I don't know why, but this color combo speaks to me....I really glad I am not in your local market :)

canyoneagle 02-21-21 08:24 PM

Wow! Nice collection - past and present. Thanks for sharing.
Are you in SLC? I lived there for 5 years - commuted by bike year round, and enjoyed longer rides on the weekends. Great bike city.

In 2011 I took one of my former bikes for a birthday ride from my old rental house in Sugarhouse up to Big Mountain Pass.

Marinoni with a Sturmey 3 speed out back. Lovely day, and I regret ever selling that bike

That's a beauty! I'm northeast of SLC by a little over an hour.
