Vintage Nashbar Road Bike

I am 6'2" so a large frame is mandatory.

These were good bikes. Found one in the Olympia WA Goodwill, dirty with flat tires, so priced like all the other dept store BSO's. But had Chrome moly tubing, axle adj screws and rode nice.

Made in Japan, I think by Sekine. May have a rising sun logo on the seat tube and somewhere have the slogan "Worlds finest bicycle". Sekine had a full range of models that tended to have better components than their competition. Years later, I gave mine to our pastor in Salem, OR. Was stolen, so if you see one rattle canned orange with "Don" written on the top tube, grab it back!

Thje subject bicycle appears to be a 1984 Nashbar ST Road. If so, the tubeset is an unidentified Ishiwata double butted CrMo. The derailleurs should be SunTour Cyclone MKII. The crankset should be an SR CTC. The brakeset should be the ubiquitous Dia-Compe 500N. The wheels should be Sun Tour hubs laced to 700C Araya 20C rims. Claimed weight of 22 lbs for the 23" size. MSRP - $ 349 US.

This one appears to be OEM with the exception of the saddle and bar tape. One pedal cap is missing. Provided there are no major issues this is a very good deal. The Nashbar models from this are were typically manufactured by Maruishi. This was a nice mid-range model and great value in its day.

If you purchase the bicycle, I'd appreciate the serial number for my database. It will confirm the source and date.

exactly one of those passed through my hands some years ago - it was a smidge too tall for me, but I remember it as a very impressive ride. All Cyclone MkII stuff, I recall. forty bucks is a no brainer.

I stand corrected by T-Mar's encyclopedic data mind. Here's a pic of mine before orange paint. I added the colored reflectors, rack, fenders, and Brooks saddle. I do remember the rising sun logo & slogan being on it though. Don edit, think the top tube model label says "Sport Rx"

That's a different model and year than the OP's bicycle. As you state, the model is Sport Rx and based on the decals it's no older than a 1985 model. If you still have the bicycle, the serial number will confirm the origin and year.

Those "world's finest bicycle" decals or a variation thereof, can be be found on other bicycles besides Sekine. I've seen similar decals on Bridgestones. There was a Japanese institute that awarded the distinction.

BTW, it's not so much a "data mind", as a "data archive", which includes about two decades of Nashbar catalogues.

This one was stolen a few years after I gave it away, so serial # is unknown, but it was one of my favorite, Winter rain bikes while I lived in Olympia. Don

I was once told by wise people on this forum that "any C&V bike is worth 40 bucks"! The one you're considering looks like a great deal at that price.

Thxs for the serial number and additional pics. The serial number confirms that it's a 1984 Maruishi manufactured product. The drivetrain is OEM, as are the brakes. Interesting rear brake cable routing. Enjoy your new acquisition.

To get it roadworthy, I'd say not much. Maybe just new tires, and some labor/grease servicing bearings.

On top of all of that, I think you'll find that the frame is built with Suntour Pro dropouts. Nice find for you!

Congrats! Some bikes are too rare, fancy, or special in some way to be ridden much. This one just wants to go fast and far. Don
