crank upgrade?

I am currently running campy record 175 through axle (square bolt , not offboard bearing type) and was wanting to move to an offboard bearing crankset or something as light and stiff (tune?)
looking for recommendations around 500 ? something lighter than im currently running that I wont have to worry about tearing up (im 210 lbsish 6 foot 5)

This. Or you could subscribe to BonkTown and wait for another Fulcrum Racing crank to come up. I think they were around $350.

honestly the campy cranks are so nice i wouldnt bother with even looking for anything else. the chorus one is really a nice unit for the price.

my link was to total cycling, try wiggle, lickbike and ribble too for their prices. they're all offshore, and they are all very reliable sellers.

You might consider looking at Lennard Zinn's Custom Cranks. As tall as you are (and presuming that you have proportionately long legs) he can supply longer crank arms. I'm 215 lbs/6'4" and the bike he's building for me will have 200mm crank arms.

thanks for the suggestions !! :)
anyone know about how much of a weight difference there is between the last generation metal campy 175's with record carbon bb to these ?

+1
The Centaur would also be 10 spd. New Record, Chorus and Athena are 11 spd and the spacing between the chain rings may have decreased as they did from 9 to 10.

Realize however that the square taper Campy BB has less friction than modern external bearing bb's.

IMHO, not much of an upgrade, and not worth the cost.

And unless you're flexing the crank to the point that its rubbing on the derailleur, or dropping the chain, getting a stiffer crank is highly overrated.

Exactly why I'm converting my old school bikes to Campy 10 by way of Chorus square taper cranks from a couple of years ago. Can't beat the prices.

The loose ball BBs can be adjusted soooo smoothly. How do the older square taper cartridge BBs compare ?

iamsomeguy 11-11-09 01:03 PM

ditto on the prices of the square taper stuff they are smooth and pretty darn cheap now im running it on both of my good roadies and my race bike
