Time Change - GMR to the Village 6/30 with Team Unlikely Cyclist

As a result of heat concerns Team Unlikely Cyclist has decided to call off our ride up GMR on 6/30 in the interest of safety for our team members.

Anyone who chooses to ride - please be safe

Hey BG05, what do you mean "Team Unlikely Cyclist". I AM THE Unlikely Cyclist. I'm a lousy climber, I suck on the flat and I'm a real chicken going downhill (ask CalamariChris). :o ;) :D On top of that, as it is evident from the picture below, I have certain riding habits that had me banned from all SoCal cycling clubs. ;) But I like the sport anyway.

Oh, and I usually don't do rides that start before 8:00 AM, but I'll try to make this one. :D

John R 06-06-13 12:10 PM

Hey BG, My girlfriend and myself will try to make it. It would be nice to see MR Beanz there.

I will try to make it! The Grand Tour Double is the prev. weekend, so GMR/GRR would make a fine recovery ride.

Plus, we just might make it to Missy's (Mt.Baldy Lodge) in time for cinnamon rolls!

I'm still holding out hope... just got out of my cast today and into a soft cast / boot but still only partial weight bearing so I'm not sure when I'll be able to pedal. :(

volosong 06-07-13 02:52 PM

June 30th is only a couple days away from the annual "lock the GMR and GRR gate to motorized traffic on the Fourth of July" ride. I won't be there on Sunday, but will on the Fourth, (Thursday).

nesdog 06-07-13 02:59 PM

What's the stats on this ride?

Thanks BG05! I kind of figured it out from the photos that this is a women's club but I saw Mr. Beanz on the guests-of-honour list, so I assumed there is no discrimination based on gender for this ride.:D By the way, I wonder what's up with Beanz - haven't seen him post, haven't seen his videos… Did he retire from the "big sport"? ;) Anyway, I'm still in but don't wait for me. I'll see what time I get there and I'll probably park at the high school.

Good point, Volosong. I'm seriously considering doing the 4-th of July ride too. It was a lot of fun last year.

Might wait for the 4th as well. That sounds like an idea! Closed roads and hundreds of cyclists! Last year was a blast! :thumb:

There you are! :thumb: :D Well, then I'll see you either on 6/30 or 7/4.

As we are aiming for the Village and are bringing a SAG vehicle "just in case"... Team Unlikely Cyclist will be doing the 30th

**** me thats alot of climbing. Any good decents/tight corners? Is anyone from Escondido going that I could carpool with? I could pitch in for fuel.

Lol. The descent from the Village down GRR is glorious. Trust me.

I'm a maybe on this. Just sprained my ankle pretty bad last week, swelling is finally going down. I will test the road bike on thursday and then again on the weekend.

YES many tight turns, lightly banked w/o guard rail types :thumb:

teufelhunden222 06-17-13 11:12 PM

I need to give my new Tarmac a good test, Should I try and bum some carbon wheels and tubies for this one?

jsigone 06-18-13 11:09 AM

If you never taken Carbon wheels down a MT before, I wouldn't recommend it.

teufelhunden222 06-20-13 08:32 PM

I don't brake a whole lot. Cornering is probably my strongest area.(way to many twisties and track days on a GSXR). The fun thing is, I have yet to find my tarmacs limit as far as cornering. It would be about another 100 grams, but I am seriously considering putting the 25's on for this ride instead of the 23's. just for MOAR grip.

100 grams is a lot to carry up the hill but you can easily compensate. Try drilling a bunch of holes in the soles of your shoes, not wearing socks and removing the handlebar tape for starters.

teufelhunden222 06-21-13 12:03 AM

You think the lack of handlebar tape would make me more aero? I mean I gotta save that 1/4 watt. I gues if I surgically removed my shoulders that would be more aero as well?

The "guardrail" when there is one, is a pile of rocks, cemented together to form a barrier about 2 feet high. After that, there are places where it would be a looooooong swan dive to the bottom.

Here is a video a bud took of Teresa and I on the GRR descent. Check it out at about 1:49:
