Indexed headset after replacement (integrated)

Hello,

At the end of last season my aluminum framed Trek developed indexed steering, the typical "notch" straight ahead. Fine, replace headset. The index condition remains. I suspect this indicates damage to the integrated headset seats? I cannot see any obvious head-tube damage.

Is this something that can be remedied with having the headset seats re machined? Frame is junk? I have overlooked something?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Did you also replace the fork crown race?

Depends on the kind of headset. External cups might need to be replaced. If it is an integrated headset, the surfaces can usually be re-faced if need be.

without knowing what kind of headset it is and looking at he surfaces, it is difficult to tell what is wrong.

Race, yes.

Integrated "IS" headset. Yes, that is sorta what I trying to ascertain, will re machining the bearing seats solve this kind of problem, or does it indicate stretching of the head-tube.
