Need advice buying used bike

Hi everyone,

I've been looking at buying a used 1990's style mountain bike. I've narrowed it down to two in my area and I would really appreciate any advice from the site here.

They're both at least 10 - 20 years old I would say, maybe more. One is a Specialized Hardrock, the other is a Marin. I don't know the model of the Marin. It supposedly has a chromoly frame. Both rigid. The Marin has a 21" frame and the Specialized a 19". Also, the Specialized has riser bars vs the Marin's flat bars. The seat seems to be lower on the Specialized too. They're being sold from a reseller, fully serviced and with a receipt.

Anyway, I was hoping some of you might be willing to offer some advice that would help me choose one. It's been years since I've bought a bike and I just want to make the best decision. I know my height and desired riding will ultimately determine the best fit, I'm just wondering if one will be better quality than the other.

Thanks!

Luke

When buying used, especially vintage, the priorities are:
Does it fit?
Has it been damaged/abused/overused?
Components scratched or any rust?
Is it rideable today? Every gear combo function?
What level of components? takes some learning
Will it need upgrades to serve your purpose?
Does it make you smile?
Fair price?
The end.

When you are asking about 20 year old bikes, it is important to understand that even knowing the model, the components could have been changed from stock. In this case, you don't even know the model year of the Hardrock, and you don't know the model or year of the Marin, so it isn't even possible to know the original part specs of either bike. On top of that, without detailed pictures of the bikes and all components it isn't possible to even guess about the condition of either bike. A bike brand name alone is insufficient information to advise you

The most important single thing is which fits better. I'd imagine with 2 inches difference in seat tube length one is going to fit you better than the other. Get the one that fits better.
