Walk of shame!

Today's ride was 8 miles and 800 ft. with 15% hills.
Was already tired after a 2 mile hill that lasted almost 20 mins. (5% to 16% grade)

On the way back, first time I got off the bike and walked it.
15% grade. It was out of saddle, but I was in gear 1/1 already, so it was too low once out of saddle
Got off and pushed until grade was back to 5%.

Are there points in your ride where you get off and push?
This must be hard if riding in a group.

No need to feel shame during cross training. I have stopped on hill climbs for rather short breaks. I have abandoned my route or turned around early as well. I may have walked some hills when I first started but that's me. You do you.

2 options for the future:

1. Get stronger
2. Get lower gears

Maybe both.

The gears were low enough at 1/1
I was going slow, but my legs were just burnt out.
Also my HR was maxed out, as these hills were pretty long

Long hills on an 8 mile ride?

Lower gears are available for those who need it. Also refer to Option 1 in my previous comment.

2 miles long, apparently. You and I may have a different definition of "long" based on our local terrain.

Yes. Valid point.

Do you even have and ride a bike? :)

delbiker1 06-28-23 10:32 AM

No such thing as a walk of shame.

Obviously not...but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, recently.

:thumb: If we starve this one for one month will that be long enough for it to wither and die?

It's a good thought, but many are seduced by the siren song of a troll.

Yeah, it's fun to whack them and it gives them the attention they seek. But....my mod says ignore them and they'll go away. I've never seen that happen here, hard for such a large number of folks to get united behind a plan. So confusing. :foo:

Doesn't talking about starving a trolling thread, ON THE TROLLING THREAD, kind of defeat the purpose?

Some of the troll threads can be interesting and even fun. I'm not that good at detecting trolls, like some are. Sometimes, like in the case of this thread, it's hard to know if the OP is real. I mean, if you discount any history and just look at the post, it could be someone who is genuinely inexperienced and has no fitness base or frame of reference.
Or something like that.

Of course, but there will always be people who respond anyway. Like we did.

My gears are lower, but mine is a touring bike, so even loaded I can spin up the hill. I am sure at some point I will have to walk a hill though. There is no shame in getting off and walking the bike. Some hills/rides suck. You are still getting a good workout. You also worked your legs to failure, which can be a good building technique, provided you give them time to rest and recover, which is when the muscle is actually built.

shelbyfv 06-28-23 11:09 AM

Yes, context is important. This one has been identified as a sock of a banned user but as you say, the thread can appear innocent until they start rolling with it. Usually they are much sneakier than the Abu girls!

Yes. I'm still trying to absorb the concept, figure how it can work.:foo:

Yep... You should feel bad about it... But considering the conditions ya don't need to feel shame.

Long ago I went to a 34T bail out cog on my freewheel. It was great and then... After a few years and a few walks... I went to a 34T chain ring up front. That was the kicker as when I went to my 1:1 it was time to go to my Size 12D. Yep... The Walk Of Shame to be sure...

But Holy Mackerel Bat Man! Now I am running a 30T Chain Ring up front and still using my 34T bail out in the back!

And I do that more often then I would like to admit!

This getting old stuff is only for the strong...

ofajen 06-28-23 11:48 AM

Walking, running and biking can all be good exercise and fun.
