patellar tendon rehab suggestions?

Like father ... like son, but the latter had to outdo his old man on this one. :(

I have dislocated my left patella twice, first in the late 1960s, then in the early 1990s. I have never required a surgical repair, and I have good function, although I scrupulously keep up my knee exercises to protect myself from a recurrence. (I am also pretty wimpy about doing things like running down stairs or slopes.)

My elder son (middle of photo from our Fathers Day ride last year, with his firstborn in the bike trailer) recently dislocated his left patella, but also managed to tear the tendon, which was repaired last week. He is in a brace which will be kept rigid for three more weeks, the gradually opened up. (This is why we have traded Audi A4s for awhile, although he still razzes me about driving an automatic. :) ) Having never been through anything this traumatic with my knees, I don't know what to tell him. beyond following sound medical advice from his surgeon and his brother, who is a newly-minted DPT. Bicycling will be great, once he gets enough motion back -- the surgeon was pretty happy with the 60 degrees he obtained on the operating table, but I am sure he'll have a lot less after three weeks of immobilization.https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f7e16927a7.jpg

My advice would echo yours ... you pay dearly for good medical advice from those with experience, so follow it!

Patellar issues can be really difficult. My sister fractured her kneecap months before I had my tibial plateau fracture, and she is still limping around.
