Decomposing Human Remains Found Near Whittier Narrows Dam
 

Yikes! I'll be following this...right off the bike path.

A forensic investigation has been launched to identify the decomposing human remains found Tuesday morning by workers near the Whittier Narrows Dam.
The discovery of the remains was made by Los Angeles County Flood Control workers who were conducting a survey. The remains were located on a water causeway 200 yards north of the Whittier Narrows Dam, specifically on the west bank of the San Gabriel River, approximately 100 yards west of Bicentennial Park in Pico Rivera, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities say they estimate those remains have been in that location for "several months."
The investigation is expected to yield information about the victim's cause and time of death, as well as their identity.

Relax - they probably aren't cyclists. That's just a good place to dump a body.

Possibly one of the homeless who live in the riverbed up that way too.

Seems incredible that the remains stayed there for a few months. From the description it sounds like the body was between the bike path and the river. Looking on Google Maps, I only see a small patch of vegetation, maybe 50 x 100 feet, where it could stay unseen. Even then I'd imagine that it would stink up the place pretty badly.

They yanked a floater out of Ballona Creek last year, and apparently I rode right by it without noticing a thing.

Wait until a 100-year flood event and you'll see all kinds of stuff come out of the rivers. In 1980 and 1992 everything from palm trees to dead cows ended up on the beaches.

I smell that smell at least once a week on my rides, but who wants to go fishing around in storm drains, swampy ditches and such while wearing plastic-soled shoes and shorts with a highly absorbent crotch-pad?
I prefer to assume it's road kill or a coyote who retired.

Several years ago; when that dam in Corona was in danger of collapsing, a four door BMW washed ashore next to the Yorba Regional Park.

Badly decomposed is right. Investigators could not even determine the gender. :eek:

They have to wait for the autopsy.

Now I'm never going to be able to ride past that smell without envisioning a disincorporating cadaver. (Perhaps just fantasizing it's my ex-wife will help. :lol:)

Somebody placed a dead seal next to a trash can just upwind of the beach path in Playa Del Ray last week. It was there for a few days and stunk pretty bad. I felt bad for all the walkers and joggers who had to go right past it and endure the smell for much longer than I did.

Years ago a dead adult sea lion washed up on the rip rap in front of a condo complex at high tide then became wedged in when the tide receded. It was well over 500 lbs and there wasn't room to get equipment in so I told 2 guys to put rainsuits on and cut it up with chainsaws. I went to check on the progress and could smell it a block away. One of the guys enjoyed it; he said he felt like Jeffrey Dahmer. I terminated him later for an unrelated incident of workplace violence.

About a year ago, I was climbing Turnbull Canyon and, near the top, there was something big and dead over the side. I didn't stop to investigate, but the smell was unmistakable. (and very strong.)

Does this have any effect on the bike path?

Ha I rode over there and no change at all to the bike path. I couldn't tell exactly where the body was found but frankly I was a little too creeped out to do much off-path exploring. I've ridden by that corpse how many times never suspecting?? Not even a turkey vulture circling...

That tat is fairly distinctive. Hope that they can ID her. Really does make you wonder, though. Crime victim? Overdose? Yes sad...even if it stays a Jane Doe never claimed...:(
