Just bought a new (to me) Trek Madone and now realize it is a WSD
I just bought a Trek Madone 6.2 (2011 model) for $800 off of Facebook Marketplace. Rode it around the neighborhood before I bought it and it fit like a glove at 54cm. Got home and realized it is probably a WSD! I'm 5'11" but I wear pants with a 29 inch inseam. I'm pumped to have gotten such a nice bike so cheap.
Thoughts? |
If it fits you then ride it and enjoy it.

If it fits, you have to acquit.
Seriously, if it fits.. .ride it. It's not like you bought women's panties instead of boxers. |
Oh no. Not another Trek.
Sounds like you got got a good deal and you like it. Go ride it and enjoy it. :thumb: |
Hardest part to get used to was the SRAM Rival shifters. I'm used to Shimano where you use the whole lever to shift one way and the small the other. Strange using just the small to go up and down!
|
Is that the red one? If the Trek archive is right, the WSD Madone 6.2 that year was red, and the other was not. Red is faster, therefore, the WSD is faster.
Most of Trek's WSD is marketing - the frames have different colorways and they throw on some narrow handlebars and a different saddle. If it fits, ride and enjoy :) |

Yep, it's the red one. Strange thing though is the Trek archives show it with Ultegra. This one had SRAM Rival on it. Why would Trek do that? It was strange though how perfect it felt when I jumped on it. And the red looks way better in person than in the photos.

Funny because I ride Sram and find using the brake levers to shift rather odd.

So my buddy at the local bike shop looked this bike up (they happened to be the one that sold it). When I got home I initially thought this might be a WSD model based on the color combo. It is NOT listed as a WSD, but if you look at the Trek archives, this color combo IS listed as a WSD. We are guessing that they bought this as a Project One bike and used some downgraded components (again, SRAM Rival). Apparently Trek dealers are required to buy at least a couple of Project One bikes every year (does this sound right anyone?). Regardless this bike was $3700 new in 2011 when it was bought. It doesn't appear to have many miles on it at all. One tell tale sign the mechanic noticed is that the sticker on the bottom of the frame looks brand new. I'll post a picture when I have enough posts!

First of all a Madone 6.2 was available with Sram, my son has one with Force, it was not a Project One build.
Second of all you say you're 5'11" and the bike is a 54cm, I'm the same and ride a 56cm. So unless you have short legs, the bike might be a bit small. My previous bike was a 2011 Madone 4.6 which came stock with Rival and I loved it. I think I paid $2200 for it new and sold it in 2015 for $1100. While the Madone 6 has 600 level carbon vs the 400 level of my bike, yours is twice as old so the $800 sounds like a fair price, not a "steal" but fair. The real question isn't if its a WSD but does it fit you? If it does.. then ride it, if it doesn't then list it for $1000 and move on. |
I do have short legs. I have a 29" inseam. But you might be right that I could fit a 56. I really think I'm in between sizes.
|
Then better smaller than larger.

Its not pink , but if you won giro d Italia pink is a GC winner's color ..
|
If it "fits like a glove" and you really like it, you can always have GRS.

It's a bike that fits like a glove. That's a pretty good start.

Post a picture of your bike.
