Pedals for a fat guy with big/wide feet?
 

I just received my new fixed gear bike yesterday (guess which one!!tt) and rode it today for just a few miles, my first time on a bike in over 15 years. I'm 31, 5'11" 280lbs with size 13 shoes and the most irritating thing about the ride to me was it seemed like my feet are too wide for the pedals. I had planned on replacing them with some MKS GR9 but now I'm not sure. Would BMX style pedals be a better fit for me? I'm not looking to race or even go on super long rides, just want to ride around the bike path and hopefully drop a few pounds.

Definitely don't get MKS GR9's for size 13 feet... they are very compact pedals. I would think BMX pedals with velcro straps like the Retrogression straps would be a good choice for you.

MKS gr - 9's are VERY narrow; no lie; have you seen them in person? I have very narrow and thin feet and they fit me perfectly.

You should get BMX platform pedals in combination with platform pedal straps. Comparison wise, you get nearly twice the footspace to that of gr - 9's.

Cool, thanks guys. I had looked at the retro-gression bmx style with straps but they seem to be sold out. Do you think the platform pedals will cause problems like hitting the ground while turning? My bike is 55 c-c if that matters.

I wear a size 11 and the gr-9s are a bit too thin for me. Manageable, but I'm definitely looking at replacing them. The next problem you will certainly have is toe clips, as its hard to find XL sized types that aren't just bizarre proportions.

Check out dan's comp; they are more of a BMX oriented bicycle e store that I'm sure has a truck loads of platform pedals; totally legitimate.

I have wide feet and when I'm not clipless I run bmx platforms w/ holdfast.

You could also look at mtb platforms that have removable pegs. You wont be able to slide your feet into straps with the pegs in.

I run them on my bmx and have had them for a year+ now, strong spindle and pretty wide platform. These plus some straps should be alright if you wanted to go the bmx platform route.
