Ulock mounting options
Hi All, Has anyone heard of aluminum ulock mounts? I'm not really finding any online. I've quickly broken three plastic ones with standard use. They don't seem very durable at all. Or if anyone has any creative ways to mount your ulock? Thanks!

I don't know what kind of saddle you use or if you regularly travel with a saddlebag, but I had a lot of luck with THESE before switching to a large randonneur bag. They rattle a bit on bumpy roads and I added a securing loop up top after having one bounce out over some VERY rough tree roots but generally speaking I found it to be a really good solution.

This is how I carry mine when I roll out with full battle-rattle. Lets me pack more stuff inside the pack itself (groceries, souvenirs, etc). Alternatively I slip it inside the pack, which has a pocket inside the main chamber that keeps it from getting tangled with whatever I have inside, just with less room to work with.

The stress on a mount depends vastly on how it's fitted, and what load is put on it by the lock as a result. Mount it right and you can put a foot in the lock and stand on it. Mount it wrong and all the weight of the lock will be putting a nasty leverage on it, with inevitable results.

ABUS makes some of the best U-lock mounts for their quality locks. Other companies see mounting as an afterthought ABUS sees it as part of the lock. If you are breaking those you should reach out to ABUS because that is unlikely to happen. They typically break their test rig before the lock mount. However if you have a rack you can get the Highland Fat Straps and bungee it to the rack fairly easily or put it in a pannier. Or get an ABUS Bordo and they are super easy to carry on a bike.

I've thought about having some 3D printing work done to create a mount-set so I can clip my Granit down to my rear rack. The bike I currently ride doesn't really have a good spot for their lock mount!

Recent OnGuard U-locks come with useful and sturdy plastic mounts. No problems in more than six months of regular use.
I never got around to messing with the fussy Velcro strap mount that came with my Kryptonite Mini 7. I took off the doodad that clips into the mount, so I can slide the lock into a pocket more easily. I might see if I can repurpose that Velcro strap mount to work with a light or video camera. |
