So i almost made a century

i started out planning on the metric. i have never gone over 30 miles so i thought that would be a great accomplishment. anyways at 15 miles this great looking girl goes by so i tag along at the first break i say hi and her and her friend are like hey wanna ride with me... so i couldnt pass it up. anyways long story short one of them cut a tire at 82 miles and we got a ride back. so now i have commited to a 100 mile ride in a month to make up for us not completing this one... the two of them are in great shape and run marathons all the time. the longest ride before this for them was a metric. i am way out matched but by some stroke of luck, managed to hang with them the entire run well admittedly around 75 i was realy strugling... so what should i do to get up to speed here...

thanks

no doubt! well i got her email address, her friend gave me both of their email addys, probably didnt feel comfortable giving out her phone number. no prob they have marathons lined up every weekend to the century anyways so maybe ill get her number at the next one. but not if she kicks my ass  so i need to get on it... what should i do?

Quit your day job and start a strict workout routine round the clock. :D

Seriously though, you know that the two girls obviously weren't stupid. They could tell that you were struggling towards the end, and obviously they still respected you.

It's kind of like when I was in college and worked out incessantly at the gym. I always had respect for anyone who stepped foot in the gym and was postive to people who were out of shape and trying to work out. The two girls probably respected the fact that you weren't sitting on your arse and were out riding :). After all, they most likely respected the fact that you were pushing your limits :).

BTW... get BOTH their numbers... who knows... maybe they like to do EVERYTHING together.

Sounds like it is time to take up running and that you are also thining about swimming so you can do triathlons. Just kidding! Good luck.

mobius11 11-05-06 04:08 PM

LOL well i have never been a runner so i think that is out... ill stick to riding as i do enjoy that... and they started dropping me the last two miles right before the rest stop so no doubt they knew i was struggling but they were real cool about the whole thing...

v1k1ng1001 11-05-06 04:34 PM

keep riding with them, they will whoop your ass into shape

even if they come to think of you as their little brother they no doubt have hot friends that you will eventually meet

Lucky07 11-05-06 07:34 PM

Train, man! Train like you never have before!!!

Seriously, map out a program for yourself & stick to it. You'll pick up speed & endurance slowly but surely...

A month is plenty of time and if you can that 82 miles for sure you can do 100 so don't let there be a mental limit here. As the others have said ride ride ride. Do some hard intervals and LT stuff. This may seem wrong and I am sure I am going ot get doubters here but over the summer I got a MBT and the riding (in this area) is much different and pushes you LT better than just a normal roadie ride. Now I am sure it is similar to LT intervals on a roadie but I never do fixed intervals on my roadie. Mix those intervals in with adding to your base miles but just doing some good distance riding. Do 40-50 mile rides for base and do the intervals based on time, don't worry about the distance. If you can find a group ride to go out with make sure it pushes you for speed...a couple weeks of this will put you in a better place but make sure you taper the week before so that you aren't burned up.

And +1 on the

finally some good info, thank you. i was thinking of training something along these lines. even if nothing comes out of this except i finish a century i will be extremely happy. i am joining a local club and they do 40 mile runs sat and sunday so i figure ill get in a group a little higher than i should and just push it, i fi get dropped oh well... and ill ride a couple days a week on my own.

munkyv22 11-06-06 11:33 AM

Also remember that in order to ride 100 miles once every few months, you don't have to ride 100 miles all the time. Ride hard for 20, 30, 40 miles. Once you do the century and drop your pace a bit, your body will have no issues with the longer distance. When I rode my first century the longest training ride I had done was 53 miles. They were hard and fast miles, but still.

I guess my point is, don't kill yourself worrying about distance as much as focusing on building strength and endurance.

Testostrone, the forgotten training aid.

AndrewP 11-06-06 04:08 PM

Email them, and ask their advice on training so you wont get dropped by them so badly next time. Tell them how much you enjoyed that ride and how good they are.

Leif-fire-eater 11-06-06 04:33 PM

I'm looking to do my first century soon hopefully before thanksgiving. I'm brand new to road bikes and kept taping out at about 50 miles on my track bike. I'm really looking forward to more miles, but am a little nervous. 100 seems pretty big

*Most* runners do not do marathons every weekend....well, unless your name is Dean Karzarnes....

If they can run a marathon every weekend and recover, they probably live in a flying saucer.

Seems like you just might have a chance to keep up:lol: if you get on the EPO, testosterone and blood transfusions.

Then, if you make it to the finish w/2 women, I think a bucket of Viagra might come in handy.

Good luck!!!
