Show off your late 1980's Schwinn road bike here

I have purchased a 1986 Prelude in awesome original condition. I should be taking delivery of it next week sometime. In the meantime, let me drool over your special Schwinn road bike and tell me something about the history of how it came to be yours. Or anything else you would like to share about it!!

CHEERS!!

Heres my 1989 Schwinn Voyageur. I traded away a ProFlex Beast that I had $80.00 invested in including the purchase price. =0) Cell phone pics are all I can do. =0(

As it sits today.

Here's my '87 Paramount with 7-speed 7400 Dura-Ace. It was listed on Spokane craigslist for $250. I told the seller that I'd be stealing it at that price and asked him to take $500 so I could sleep with a clear conscience. He had purchased it from the original owner in the early nineties. The original Emerald paint was pretty rough, so I had Dr. Deltron respray it in Ferrari Red which was a 1987 Paramount factory color.

I have 3 late 80's Schwinns.
1988 Ontare, Tempo and Premis
The Ontare was an eBay win because I had to have it to match the other two. The Tempo and Premis was a CL find. Husband and wife matched set. They rode test bikes at the Schwinn dealer (North Town Schwinn - Cedar Rapids IA). They brought the two bikes home, he rode his about 5 miles she never rode hers. Mint condition on both. :thumb: $300 for the set.

I ride the Ontare but the other 2....not so much. :twitchy:

Well, this is my '89 prelude. Need to take a current picture of it because the configuration has been changed somewhat:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...lass/dafds.jpg

Sorry, the pics are a bit gratuitous.

Oh, and since you asked about the history, I bought it as a basketcase and powdercoated the frame, then rebuilt it with all new (well, used) parts from the ground up. I knew I wanted the frame because of the '87 super sport I had [and stupidly sold], my favorite riding bike of all time! (the prelude is pretty much the same thing though, and equally excellent)

Here are a few more gratuitous schwinn pictures just because

This wasn't quite late 80's but it was an 80's schwinn nonetheless, also regret selling, although it was a little big.

You'll enjoy your prelude, the tenax schwinns are about as under rated as bikes come.

Scooper, as always very nice! I wish I could take pic like that.

ilikebikes, great looking bike. Where did you get that bell and did it come with the stem mount, it looks like a Crane bell. Do you have another pic of that handlebar cage. I've been looking for one and can't find anything I like.

I agree. Most people overlook them. My Le tour is a Tenax tube bike.

It's a good color, but I played with different settings(AV vs TV) on the camera that day. I came up with a couple of different examples. Here is a different setting.

Its a shame Schwinn closed doors when they did, but I guess all things end eventually, it would of been intersting to see what they could continue to put out into the '90s, they seemed to be doing a lot of things right by the late 80s, look how many great road machines you Americans had within reach. There wasn't any big Canadian company left to do anything, if CCM managed to stick around I can't imagine they would of been half as good as those Schwinns.

That is a great transformation. Is that paint or powder-coat? And who did it?

rccardr 01-13-11 10:04 PM

'87 SuperTempo. Nice Tempo Tenax frame, touched up as needed, then fitted with all new Shimano 105 9 speed drivetrain with a compact crank, Michelin pro Race 3 tires, Ultegra hubs with Mavic Open Pro rims, D-A dt shifters, Tektro brake calipers and levers:
http://i797.photobucket.com/albums/y...htsidedoor.jpg

'87 Tempo, bone stock, refinished/rehabbed and sold to a gorgeous statuesque DC lady who was looking for a commuter bike. Rode it in Bike Baltimnore and a few long rides before it moved to DC, also built one just like it for my daughter but 21". Think I still have a few more in storage boxes like this, maybe a 23" and a 25":
http://i797.photobucket.com/albums/y...iinTempoB1.jpg

'86 Paramount, 56cm, swapped out the D-A tubulars for a new clincher wheelset and new Michelin ProRace 3's in gray. Very sweet bike, full D-A. Guy who bought it has decided he wants to sell it, so anyone interested, let me know. Not cheap, around $1100.

That is a great looking bike(as is every bike you lay your hands on).Nice work, Rccardr. Are there more photos of this bike posted?

Can I squeeze a 1990 in here? This is my 1990 World Sport, which I bought new from my local Schwinn dealer (still in business) when I was in college. This bike replaced my mid '70s Le Tour, which was my grandfathers....I got into an accident with it and stupidly threw it away when I was in high school.

After a year or so, I started jonesing for a bike again, so my girlfriend (now wife) helped me buy my World Sport. After I rode it a couple of times...I just lost interest in it. It sat in my mom's garage until about three years ago, when I decided to particpate in the American Cancer Society's Bike a Thon in memory of my uncle, who had recently passed away from cancer. I dug the WS out of my mom's garage and took it to the same Schwinn dealer that I bought it from....they couldn't get over the condition of it...it was like "looking at a time machine"...

This bike also rekindled my love for bikes...and while it may have fallen near the bottom of my pecking order...I love it...it's nothing special compared to the Preludes and Super Sports pictured here...but hopefully my boys will be arguing over who gets it some day...:)
